An Epic Meteor Shower Is Happening Tonight—Here's How to Watch
Today is the day—the Southern Delta Aquariids will be making its debut tonight into tomorrow morning. What is a meteor shower?
According to the New York Times, when you see a meteor shower, you're actually looking at debris from a comet that crashed into Earth's atmosphere. A comet is somewhat messy, like that one friend who always comes over and forgets all of her stuff. As comets travel, they leave behind debris (just like that friend). Sometimes, you find the stuff your friend left from last month instead of whatever new hidden object she decided to leave in your couch cushions this month—basically, the item she left a month ago that you finally found is a comet's debris. But this debris is traveling through space so fast that it explodes—creating a breathtaking meteor shower.
How can I see it?
To see the Southern Delta Aquariids tonight, your best bet is to find somewhere that has a clear view of the sky. If you're in a city, you're going to want to travel away from it, because all of the city lights will make the meteor shower harder to see. But once you find a clear, dark view of the night sky, the rest is purely a waiting game. The showers will be most visible tonight into tomorrow morning.
