The Diplomat Ending ExplainedNetflix

The Diplomat is Netflix's new political psychological thriller series following US Ambassador, Kate Wyler, who was given the appointment after one of the United Kingdom's aircraft carriers was bombed. Kate now must deal with an international crisis that could potentially cause World War III, all while trying to manage her failing marriage. If you've just finished season 1 and you've got some questions, we've got the answers you're looking for. Here's the ending of The Diplomat explained.

SPOILERS FOR THE DIPLOMAT AHEAD

What happened in the last episode?

In Episode eight of The Diplomat, the plan to arrest Russian mercenary group leader Roman Lenkov for bombing the UK aircraft carrier is revealed, but we later find out that Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge actually planned to assassinate him. The UK Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison argues that killing Lenkov would look bad, and that only the people who hired him for the job would want him dead. That's when Kate and Dennison realize that Trowbridge was actually behind the bombing the whole time, and he faked an attack on his own country.

Meanwhile, Kate's husband Hal is on his way to meet Tory Member of Parliament Merritt Grove for dinner, but when he gets there, he sees that Kate's Deputy Chief of Mission Stuart Heyford and aide Ronnie are already there since Kate didn't want him to go. Grove gets annoyed by this and storms out, so Heyford and Ronnie chase after him. Hal walks up to them from the other side. When Grove opens the car door, it immediately explodes.

We then see Kate and Dennison back in Paris surrounded by security. Somebody says something to Kate, and she starts to cry, and that's where the episode ends.

Did Hal, Grove, Heyford, and Ronnie die in the explosion?

Since the episode ends just a few seconds after the explosion, we are left with quite the cliffhanger. We don't know if anyone survived, but since we're left with Kate crying after being given some sort of news at the end, it doesn't look good. Grove was the one who opened the car door, setting off the bomb, and Ronnie was right next to him, so it's very unlikely that they could have survived the explosion. Hal and Heyford were still far enough from the car they it's more likely they could have potentially survived.

Who put the bomb in Grove's car?

Unfortunately, twho planted the bomb isn't revealed either, but we can assume that Grove knew Trowbridge's plan, and so he was being killed off before he could spill anything. Earlier in the episode Kate had called Trowbridge's assistant to ask if he would be upset if the meeting were postponed. In doing this, Trowbridge could have realized that Grove knew something and was planning on revealing it.

Will there be a season two of The Diplomat?

Unfortunately Netflix hasn't renewed The Diplomat for a season two just yet, but there's still a lot of questions left unanswered and a ton of room for expansion, so fingers crossed. It all depends on how well the show does, but it's been quite successful, landing itself on the Netflix Top 10 list, so things are looking good for a renewal. If the streaming giant does decide to do a season two, we could get it as soon as summer 2024 based off of how long season 1 took.
