'Endeavour' Returns This Weekend

It's all very "good news, bad news" for Endeavour fans. The show is finally set make its triumphant return to our screens this weekend, with plenty of mysteries left to unfold. Unfortunately, season 9 will also be the show's last.

Here's what we know so far about what's to come for the beloved detective drama.

When does Endeavour season 9 premiere?

The 9th and final season of Endeavour will premiere on June 18, 2023 at 9 p.m. eastern on PBS Masterpiece. As with season eight, it will be made up of three episodes written by show creator and writer Russell Lewis.

PBS has also developed a documentary on the series, Morse and the Last Endeavour, which debuted June 11. Check your local listings for future showings.

Why is the show ending?

Last May, a tweet posted to the official Endeavour account announced that after 10 years, the series would be ending after season 9.

"After 10 phenomenal years, @mammothscreen, @ScriptULike, Shaun Evans & @All_Allam have mutually decided to bring #Endeavour to a close. Series 9, currently filming in Oxford, will be the last. Thank you to the Endeavour family & fans," the announcement read.

Prior to season 8, the show's star Shaun Evans told the Radio Times of the show's future, "This is our story and we shouldn’t be staying at the party too long. It’s difficult because it’s like planning your own funeral. Why would I not want to be earning this money? Why would I not want to be hanging out with these people who I love? But you have to be strict. We shouldn’t be milking it. I want to make sure that everybody feels, within reason, that we’ve finished it in a satisfying way."

Endeavour's creators have always been frank about the show's built-in time limit. Morse, the popular TV series that Endeavour serves as a prequel to, began airing in 1987, and Lewis and Evans had previously made it clear that they intended for the show to end before they caught up to the original series, to maintain continuity between that two.
