The Empire State Building Went Red For Heart Health Awareness
A rosy glow was cast over the Manhattan skyline on Tuesday, Feb. 4 as the Empire State Building was lit in shades of red, white, and pink, to honor National Heart Health month, which kicked off on Feb. 1. It's sort of poetic that a building deemed the heart of New York was glowing red for Heart health.
The lighting was in collaboration with Woman’s Day and designer Betsey Johnson as part of the #LOVEYOURHEART campaign to benefit women’s heart health. It was also, in part, a celebration of the forever fabulous Betty Boop’s 90th birthday. The Betty Boop brand, along with Woman's Day and Johnson,all advocate for better heart health and safety precautions for women of all ages.
Cardiovascular disease, even today, is still the number one killer of women, and according to the American Heart Association, kills about one in three women each year, which is almost a death a minute.
Woman’s Day, which has always been a prominent advocate for better heart health and awareness, was represented at the lighting ceremony by Editor-in-Chief Susan Spencer, who kicked off the event by expressing her excitement for the lighting, as well as ensuring women of all ages get the care they need from their doctors. Johnson followed and spoke about her open heart surgery last January, and reminded women to be advocates for their own health, especially if they feel unheard by their doctors.
That night, Spencer, Johnson and Betty Boop attended the Woman’s Day Red Dress Awards, a long-standing tradition honoring advocates within the heart health community.
It was there where Johnson revealed a special t-shirt made in collaboration with Woman's Day and Betty Boop to benefit the Katz Institute for Women’s Health. The shirt, which is $30, will be on sale from now till the end of March.
