In an Emotional Tribute, Women of Color Celebrate Kamala Harris

With the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President–elect Kamala Harris imminent, the historic nature of the event has started to sink in. For the first time, the United States will have a woman vice president. Harris will also be the first Black and South Asian person in the job. That’s not lost on two organizations—led by women of color—that have debuted a new video to celebrate this milestone. 

“Throughout history, women have been the fuel for lasting change. We push forward against every setback, determined. Because we understand what’s at stake for us, for our families, and for our communities. 2020 brought more and more challenges, yet still, women brought change,” a narrator says over video of Harris, as well as countless advocates, past and present, who made this moment possible. “We turned out in record numbers to elect new leadership for our country. Led by Black women and women of color, we organized, marched, voted, and we made history.”

Echoing Harris’s own statements in her rousing acceptance speech back in November 2020, Supermajority and Phenomenal Productions assure women that the incoming vice president will be the first of many women of color to reach the highest offices of the United States government. 

“We did this. You did this. Women made this historic moment possible. The spirit of this moment lives in every woman who has imagined, and worked to build a better future,” the narrator continues. “Together, women are a supermajority. And together, we will make sure she is not the last. Let’s use our power to open the door even wider to women everywhere.”

The Supermajority Education Fund aims to provide resources, training, and education to help women take civic action in their communities. Meanwhile, Phenomenal Productions—cofounded by Meena Harris, niece to Kamala Harris and an entrepreneur in her own right—works to “stand at the intersection of culture and politics with a specific emphasis on communities of color and underrepresented voting blocs,” per its website. 

“Kamala Harris is an incredible leader and inspiration to women and girls everywhere—including to my two little girls who will be watching, glued to the screen, as she is sworn in as the first woman vice president on Wednesday,” Supermajority Education Fund executive director Amanda Brown Lierman said in a statement to Glamour. “This video celebrates that unapologetic joy, that hope, that sense of pride and expectation women—especially women of color—will be feeling on January 20th. Women have marched, organized, voted, and worked so hard for this moment. Nothing is going to stop us from celebrating our first woman vice president!”
