The Emmys Didn't Honor Kobe Bryant, Kelly Preston, Or Nick Cordero During Its 'In Memoriam'

• The 2020 Emmys didn't include a few major actors who passed away this year.

• The Emmys honored Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and actors like Chadwick Boseman and Naya Rivera but didn't mention Kobe Bryant, Nick Cordero or Kelly Preston.

• Zach Braff just tweeted that apparently people have to campaign to get their loved ones featured in the segment.

The 2020 Emmys stuck to its allotted three-hour time slot last night, which included a few bits about what a trash fire this year has been, a truly tasteless joke about ICE, and an In Memoriam segment that neglected to include some of the most notable Hollywood figures we lost this year.

Jimmy Kimmel introduced this part of the show with a tribute to late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Then, images and audio of celebrities like Naya Rivera and Chadwick Boseman were featured as H.E.R. performed a cover of "Nothing Compares 2 U."

It was a beautiful segment amid a heartbreaking year. Only, the Emmys overlooked a few major celebrities who died since last year's ceremony. Despite hosting the show from the Staples Center, where Emmy-winner Kobe Bryant once made history for the Lakers, ABC left the NBA star and occasional actor out of the tribute. Television and movie star Kelly Preston, Scrubs actor Sam Lloyd, MythBusters star Grant Imahara, and Broadway and television actor Nick Cordero were also among those not included.

This morning, as more and more people wondered why these monumental figures weren't honored by the Emmys, Zach Braff offered an explanation. Tweeting about his friend Nick specifically, Zach wrote, "For those wondering: The Emmys chose to leave Nick Cordero out of the memorial montage. I had no idea one had to campaign to get their loved one in. We did. They passed."

Zach also included the response he received from the Television Academy and added that he didn't campaign for Sam to be included because he thought his acting credits spoke for themselves and didn't think anyone would dare to leave him out.

It's not clear if this was also the case with Kobe and Kelly, but it definitely calls into question how these segments are created and why some celebrities who no doubt shaped the industry and culture were left out by the Television Academy. If time were the major issue here, surely ABC could've cut that joke about ICE and used those extra seconds for the tribute? Hopefully the Academy comes up with a better system so that everyone can be included next time.
