The Golden Globes may have foreshadowed the year’s biggest haircut trends, but the Emmys 2024 red carpet confirmed one of our biggest makeup predictions for 2024: vampy lips. If this year’s attendees are anything to go by, it’s clear we're in for another moody wave of goth glam and super-bold lipstick.

Selena Gomez, Aubrey Plaza, and Dominique Fishback all wore vampy shades of burgundy and plum lipstick for the occasion. Clearly, they (or as least their makeup artists) agree: Wednesday-inspired grunge makeup isn’t going anywhere. How appropriate, seeing as Wednesday was nominated for a slew of Emmys tonight.

Celebrity makeup artist Nick Barose, who works with Lupita Nyong’o and Lily Gladstone, previously told Glamour that Wednesday-core and goth glam would go even further this year. More specifically, Barose predicted an uptick in “extra-bold, extra-dark, extra-vampy” glam, pointing to dark reds and “plummy” lips in particular, much like the deep shade Gomez wore.

Gomez’s look was created by makeup artist Hung Vanngo, who shared the exact lip combination he used via Instagram. According to Vanngo, Gomez wore Rare Beauty’s Lip Liner in Strong and Kind Words Matte Lipstick in shades Strong (a rich chocolate) and Bold (a deep berry rose formerly known as Devoted).

“Gorgeous full lashes are from Lashify,” Vanngo continued. “Here is my lashes map: B8, B10, D10, D10, D12. I also stacked some C12 on the outer upper corner for extra volume.” Gomez’s glam matched her custom Oscar de la Renta gown perfectly, which was crafted using 450,000 sequins. NBD!

Of course Gomez was in good company. Not one but two other Emmy nominees leaned into plum- and wine-inspired hues for their lips: Plaza, nominated for her role on The White Lotus, and Fishback, nominated for Swarm.

Plaza'’s makeup was courtesy of makeup artist Kathy Jeung, who created the look with L’Oréal Paris True Match Super Blendable Foundation, Powder, and Concealer; Infallible Soft Matte Bronzer and Blush; and True Match Lumi Glotion Natural Glow Enhancer. For lips, Jeung used Colour Riche Intense Volume Matte Lipstick in “Worth It.”

Plum lips weren’t the only bold look of the night. Kathryn Hahn, nominated for Tiny Beautiful Things, and Tracee Ellis Ross both opted for bold burgundy and true red lips instead. Slightly less grunge, but still very glam.

Hahn’s look was created by celebrity makeup artist Fiona Stiles. “The partnership between hair, makeup, and styling is very important,” says Stiles. “We do not work in isolation, so when stylist Jordan Johnson sent me the reference for the dress, she had mentioned they perhaps wanted to do a dark lip, which I thought could be really beautiful and chic,” she said.

Stiles used Yon-Ka’s Hydra No. 1 Serum, Yon-Ka Paris Phyto-Contour eye cream, and Yon-Ka Paris Creme 28 Hydratant Douceur moisturizer to prep Hahn’s skin, and Addiction Tokyo The Glow Stick in Feel the Heat, See the Light on top of cheekbones and the orbital bone to add emollients to the skin “so it looks radiant and there’s life to the skin.”

Whatever the case, the Emmys 2024 attendees have certainly proven that more is more in 2024, especially when it comes to lipstick shades.
