Emmys 2019: The Best Watches on the Red Carpet

Any time there’s a gathering of handsome rich men in suits, like at last night’s Emmy Awards, great watches are bound to be there. For many guys, a red carpet outfit isn’t complete until they’ve put something around their wrist. The Emmys are a pretty low-key style event relative to the rest of the awards calendar, but all your favorite TV stars—Kit Harington! Sterling K. Brown! Dan Levy!—hit the watch bull's-eye last night. A red carpet event calls for fine dress watches, and the men at the Emmys delivered tenfold. Let’s take a look.

Kit Harington’s IWC Da Vinci Automatic Moon Phase 36

According to IWC, this watch is named for the way it “pays tribute to Leonardo da Vinci’s tireless search for mathematical rules for beauty and proportions.” Incredibly dope. The moon phase—which is meant to track what the moon looks like on any given night—is also the perfect sort of complication for a red carpet watch: beautiful but completely superfluous.

Antoni Porowski’s OMEGA Speedmaster Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Edition

Queer Eye’s Porowski is wearing one of the coolest watches to release this year: a special-edition gold piece celebrating the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. The Omega Speedmaster is the only timepiece approved by NASA to go to the moon with astronauts, and it was on the wrists of both Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong 50 years ago when they made one giant leap for mankind. This watch’s cheesy yellow is meant to replicate the actual shade of the moon on certain nights.

Dan Levy’s Cartier Tank MC

Dan Levy’s character in Schitt’s Creek has a hard time giving up the finer things in life while transitioning from trust-fund kid to country bumpkin. Despite moving out to the titular podunk town, he still wears Rick Owens, Givenchy, and Maison Martin Margiela. The Cartier Tank is exactly the kind of watch—beautiful, precious, dressy—Levy’s character would refuse to give up.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau’s IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar

A perpetual calendar is one of the most impressive complications in watchmaking. As long as it remains wound, it will keep the exact date—navigating leap years and different-length months—until the year 2100. I assume that is also the year George R.R. Martin will finally release the next Game of Thrones installment, Winds of Winter.

Sam Rockwell’s Montblanc Heritage Chronometrie Ultra Slim

Montblanc makes watches that check both the “affordable” and “incredibly sexy” boxes. Here, Rockwell is wearing a very simple and very thin Montblanc that, when it was actually available several years ago, cost only a couple thousand dollars.

Alfie Allen’s Omega De Ville Prestige Co-Axial Power Reserve

While Omega is known for sporty watches like its Speedmaster, the De Ville is proof that the brand knows how to make a dress watch, too. The watch with the black dial and black strap is perfect for a formal event. Who is the Night King now???

Sterling K. Brown’s IWC Portugieser Automatic

There is an interesting backstory to this unusually heavy watch’s heft. In 1939, a customer requested a wristwatch that would be as accurate as the more accurate pocket watch was at the time. So IWC made a piece large enough to handle a pocket-watch movement, in the process creating a Frankenwatch that could live on the wrist. Today, that size helps it stand out on the red carpet.

Sam Richardson’s Cartier Tank Solo

While Richardson was definitely in attendance at the Emmys for Veep, I don’t keep up with that show enough to make a joke about it. So I’ll just say that this watch is versatile: It would also go perfectly with the tuxedoed baby-pageant host Richardson plays in the Netflix comedy series I Think You Should Leave.
