How Emma Thompson Stomachs the Horrors of Motherhood on SNL

Emma Thompson doesn't just play a late night host in the upcoming movie Late Night, she also hosts comedy shows in real life. On this week's episode of SNL, on Mother's Day Eve, the running theme was motherhood, and the veteran British actress came at it from a few angles.

First, in her monologue, she broke down some mom vocabulary with the help of two SNL alumna moms, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, who explained that when a mother says things like, "I love all my children equally," what she means is, "Your sister is winning."

The real horror show came in a filmed sketch, where Thompson put on an unsettlingly good American accent to star as the mother of new parent Heidi Gardner. Thompson was such a perfect mother, Gardner tells her, and how on earth did she manage to parent so well without losing her mind? The answer is apparently repressing the memories of children painting over television screens and going into fugue states at birthday parties. But when you hear the phrase "she blew out her diaper," repression is probably the healthiest way to cope.

Happy Mother's Day, y'all.
