Nathan Fielder and Emma Stone.

Ever since the pilot was announced back in 2020, the Showtime dramedy The Curse has been a highly anticipated new TV project. Canadian comedian Nathan Fielder, who’s best known for the innovative docu-reality series Nathan For You and HBO’s mind-bending The Rehearsal, has teamed up with beloved indie production company A24 for what sounds like an intriguing and satirical take on HGTV shows. That combination of elements, coupled with the A-list casting of Emma Stone, has us counting down the days until the premiere date.

Here’s everything we know so far about The Curse so far.

What is The Curse about?

Showtime describes The Curse as a “genre-bending” series focusing on the relationship between a newly married couple, who are trying to conceive a child while simultaneously co-starring in a problematic new house-flipping show for an HGTV-like network. All of this is made more complicated by the fact that they appear to be cursed.

Co-creator Benny Safdie (one half of the Safdie Brothers, who directed Uncut Gems), also acts in the show, and told GQ that he and Fielder originally conceived The Curse as a half-hour comedy, but it evolved into something different. “It started out as a 30-minute comedy and became an hour-long comedy-drama,” he said, explaining that the show explores the subject of gentrification in New Mexico.

“[The couple] live in an area called Española, which is close to Santa Fe. And that's where they're building their new homes. They have a very different way of gentrifying the community. They want to do it ethically, and they want to do it in a way that doesn't hurt anybody. So they want to make a show about that. And you follow their lives as they're doing it.”
