Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz get cutthroat in first trailer for Oscar hopeful 'The Favourite'

Greek auteur Yorgos Lanthimos has become one of international cinema’s most acclaimed filmmakers, thanks in large part to 2015’s The Lobster (for which he earned an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay) and 2017’s The Killing of a Sacred Deer. His latest, The Favourite, is already earning raves from the Venice Film Festival, where it just premiered, and it should be a considerable player in this year’s awards races. And now, you can check out its fearsome debut trailer.

Expect Academy Award nominations for some — if not all — of The Favourite’s leading ladies, who are led by Olivia Colman as Queen Anne, who from the looks of the above promo is more than a bit unhinged. Still, as the ruler of England circa the early 18th century, her affections are highly coveted, especially from her confidante Sarah Churchill (Rachel Weisz). Sarah’s close bond with the sovereign is threatened by the arrival of the queen’s cousin Abigail Masham (Emma Stone), thus instigating a rivalry for royal favor that soon devolves into all manner of petty — and then not-so-petty — conflicts. From the sounds of the strident strings accompanying its first trailer, The Favourite will be an absurd period-piece comedy that eventually dovetails into decidedly dark territory, which is exactly what fans of Lanthimos will no doubt already be expecting.

Co-starring Nicholas Hoult, The Favourite will open this year’s New York Film Festival on Sept. 28, and then debut in theaters on Nov. 23.
