Emma Stone, Meryl Streep, and Lin-Manuel Miranda Will Co-Chair the 2020 Met Gala
We're still recovering from Lady Gaga's four epic looks from the camp-themed Met Gala earlier this year, but the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art is already looking ahead to 2020. Today, the New York Times confirmed that next year's Met Gala will celebrate time, with a corresponding exhibition that will study the relationship between fashion and time.
The Met will celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2020, so Andrew Bolton, the curator of the Costume Institute, had to develop a gala theme worthy of this milestone year. "I wanted to do an exhibition focused on the collection, but not a traditional masterworks exhibition," Bolton told the New York Times. "Something that connects to the zeitgeist, and what people are talking about now." Bolton eventually realized: "it’s about time."
The corresponding exhibition, which will open on May 7, is titled "About Time: Fashion and Duration." The exhibition cites numerous sources as inspiration, including Virginia Woolf's novels and theories of French philosopher Henri Bergson. It will feature 160 pieces of women's fashion spanning a timeline from 1870 through today.
"About Time: Fashion and Duration" will also feature historic clocks from the Met's collection, which will loudly tick as guests explore the exhibition. Excerpts of Woolf's writing will be on the walls throughout the exhibit, and a new short story by Michael Cunningham, who wrote The Hours, will be part of the show experience as well.
"Fashion is indelibly connected to time," Bolton said. "It not only reflects and represents the spirit of the times, but it also changes and develops with the times."
The Met gala will be held on May 4, 2020. It will be co-chaired by Nicolas Ghesquière of Louis Vuitton, Emma Stone, Meryl Streep, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. Louis Vuitton is also underwriting the exhibition.
