In her personal life, Stone has dated former co-stars like Andrew Garfield and Kieran Culkin since marrying her husband, Dave McCary. The Arizona native revealed to Interview Magazine that after her first heartbreak at 14 years old, she was “crawling on the floor and remembers “throwing up.” She continued, “I have never felt anything quite like that. It was so visceral. It’s like someone has killed you and you have to live through it and watch it happen … It was awful,” she recalled. In 2012, the Easy A star revealed that she’s learning more about herself and the relationships she wants to be in. “I do find that I’m drawn to people in my life, romantically or not, that have something to teach me. I’m drawn to people who I feel like I can learn from. I’m not really drawn to toxic people … But there is some sense of being changed by each person that I think I’m drawn to,” she said at the time, according to Your Tango.

Stone is currently up the Best Actress in a Leading Role in Yorgos Lanthimos’ Oscar-nominated film Poor Things. In the movie, her character Bella meets men (played by Mark Ruffalo, Ramy Youssef, Jerrod Carmichael) who shape her into an empowered version of herself. “He [Lanthimos] gave me sort of the brass-tacks overview of Bella, what she goes through and what the men in her life experience as a response to how she’s evolving” Stone recalled to The New York Times in 2023 about the moment the director pitched her the film. “And I was just like, “Sign me up.” My God, she’s the greatest character I’ll probably ever get to play.”

Emma Stone and her husband, Dave McCary, reportedly first met in December 2016 when the actress returned to host Saturday Night Live. A former SNL writer, McCary penned the “Wells for Boy” sketch, which Stone starred in. Rumors started swirling that the pair were an item in October 2017. A source close to Stone and McCary confirmed to People that they were dating for at least three months.

In January 2019, Stone and McCary stepped out for a public date night when they attended a Los Angeles Clippers game together. Over the next few months, they attended the SAG Awards and 2019 Oscars, where Stone was nominated for Best Supporting Actress. By April 2019, the actress was photographed wearing what seemed to be a diamond ring, but nothing was officially just yet. Finally, the couple confirmed their engagement in December 2014.

McCary shared a (now-deleted) photo on Instagram announcing their plans to wed. The photo depicted himself and Stone smiling as she held her pearl engagement ring, designed by jeweler Yoshinobu Kataoka, facing the camera. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Page Six reported that the pair postponed their wedding in March 2020.

In September 2020, a source confirmed to People that McCary and Stone had secretly tied the knot earlier in the year. (Stone and McCary were pictured walking around L.A. wearing matching gold bands in the months prior.) The Poor Things star also appeared to be wearing a wedding ring during a video interview with Reese Witherspoon in May 2020.

One year later, the couple welcomed their daughter, Louise Jean, in March 2021. According to Vanity Fair, Stone’s daughter was named after her grandmother, Jean Louise. Stone and her mother, Krista Stone, also reportedly share the name Jean. “It’s very, very exciting,” Stone said about becoming a first-time mom during a video interview to promote her 2021 film Cruella. “I feel lucky with what lockdown has been but it has been an insane year.”

2. Andrew Garfield (2011 – 2015)

Emma Stone and her ex-boyfriend Andrew Garfield kindled a real-life romance off-screen after playing love interests Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy in The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014).

In June 2011, Us Weekly confirmed that the Marvel co-stars were in a romantic relationship. Despite appearing together at red carpet premieres and openly displaying PDA on the streets, they chose to keep the specifics of their relationship private during their time together. “I understand the interest in it completely, because I’ve had it, too,” Stone told the Wall Street Journal in 2015. “But it’s so special to me that it never feels good to talk about, so I just continually don’t talk about it.”

However, the pair often gushed about working alongside each other in press interviews. Garfield revealed that he was attracted to Stone immediately while filming their first Spider-Man film. “We got on really well as people, in between [takes],” he told MTV News in June 2012. “That was the fun stuff: In between, we’d just mess around and I felt, ‘Ah, this is different.’ I wasn’t really aware of what was happening in the screen test. She keeps you on your toes and that wakes you up. That was the beginning.”

After four years of dating, the couple ended their relationship in October 2015. Stone and Garfield have remained close friends over the years. They reunited for a chat during the AFI Awards luncheon in January 2017, and Garfield was in the front row when Stone won big at the 2017 Golden Globes and Oscars for La La Land.

“We care about each other so much, and that’s a given, that’s kind of this unconditional thing,” the actor explained on Vanity Fair’s “Little Gold Men” podcast in January 2017. “There’s so much love between us and so much respect. … I’m her biggest fan as an artist. So for me, it’s been bliss to be able to watch her success and watch her bloom into the actress that she is. And it’s been wonderful to have that kind of support for each other. It’s nothing but a beautiful thing.”

Emma Stone also formerly dated Succession star Kieran Culkin, the younger brother of Macaulay Culkin. The pair were romantically linked from 2010 to 2011 after starring in the comedy film Paper Man (2009).

Following their breakup, the duo worked together on Movie 43 (2013) and have remained friends. Stone and Culkin reunited at the 29th Annual Critics Choice Awards in January 2024. During a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Culkin said it was “funny to even say ‘ex’” when referring to Stone today. “To me, she’s just a really good friend of mine and my wife’s. She’s lovely and great,” the actor explained.

Culkin married his wife Jazz Charton in 2013, and they have two children together, including daughter Kinsey (age 4) and son Wilder (age 2). During his 2023 Emmy Awards acceptance speech for Lead Drama Actor, Culkin thanked his “beautiful wife for sharing your life with me and for giving me two amazing kids.” He continued, “And Jazz, I want more. You said maybe, if I win!” he finished his speech with a laugh, according to People.

Emma Stone briefly dated singer-songwriter Teddy Geiger, who became famous for the popular rock hit “For You I Will (Confidence).” The pair started seeing each other in 2007 and met while working on the 2008 film The Rocker, but broke up two years later in 2009.

Geiger came out as transgender publicly in 2017 via an Instagram post. “I can remember back to being 5 and looking in the mirror, feeling like a girl and wanting that,” she told The New York Times in 2018. “But growing up in Rochester, there were limited resources. I’d never met a trans person before.”

“I just feel more open,” Geiger also told the newspaper after her transition. “Because I’m willing to talk about everything now, people are then more open with me. There’s no longer this piece of me back there saying, ‘Don’t go there.’ I used to find that I’d sing songs and think, ‘Ooh, it sounds like I’m talking about that stuff, and I don’t want to talk about that stuff.’ But it was just coming out.”

The singer was previously engaged to Schitt’s Creek star Emily Hampshire. In 2009, Geiger and Hampshire ended their engagement in June 2019.
