Meet Emma Stone’s Husband, Dave McCary

Emma Stone is married to former Saturday Night Live writer and director Dave McCary. Although the couple rarely speak publicly about their romance, McCary broke tradition in 2019 when he shared news of their engagement on Instagram. At that point, Stone and McCary had quietly been dating for two years. The two secretly got married sometime in 2020 and have since welcomed their first child together.

McCary got a rare shout-out this past January, when Stone won the Golden Globe for best actress in a musical or comedy film, which recognized her performance in director Yorgos Lanthimos’s Victorian black comedy-fantasy Poor Things. She began her acceptance speech with a sweet acknowledgment of her husband: “This is amazing, thank you. Dave, I have to start with you really quickly. I love you very much. Thank you for everything!”

With Stone up for another best actress award at this Sunday's Academy Awards ceremony, it's possible that we may get another rare McCary mention.

They reportedly met in 2016.

Stone and McCary’s first encounter was on the set of SNL, when the Oscar winner hosted in 2016. He directed the sketch “Wells for Boys,” in which Stone appeared.

Before getting involved with McCary, Stone had dated her Amazing Spider-Man costar Andrew Garfield, but they’d split in 2015.

Their romance made news a year later.

Outlets first reported that Stone and McCary were an item in October 2017. A source told People that by that time, Stone and McCary had already been dating for three months. They kept hush-hush about their romance, rarely making public appearances together, and have maintained that private approach to their relationship since.

In January 2019, they were seen sitting courtside at an L.A. Clippers game, and even appeared together at the SAG Awards the same month, E! News reported.

His work on SNL got him multiple Emmy nominations.

McCary worked on NBC’s storied live-comedy series for four seasons. He earned three Emmy nominations for his work on the show, for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series in 2016, 2017, and 2018. SNL hired him as a video director in 2013, Vulture reported at the time.

He also directed and executive-produced the 2019 HBO special My Favorite Shapes by Julio Torres.

McCary co-founded the Good Neighbor sketch comedy group in 2007 with longtime collaborator and later SNL star Kyle Mooney, Beck Bennett (another SNL star), and actor Nick Rutherford. They met as students at the University of Southern California, and their sketch videos started going viral shortly after they began posting them on YouTube, racking up millions of views.

He directed a film.

Outside of his work with SNL, McCary made his feature-film directorial debut in 2017 with Brigsby Bear, which also starred and was co-written by Mooney. “We have been close friends since grade school, and this film is a culmination of years of making low-budget videos and music together,” McCary said in a statement for the movie’s appearance at Cannes Critics’ Week.

Along with Cannes, the indie project showed at Sundance and throughout the film festival circuit. Stone attended the movie’s premiere in June 2017, Page Six reported.

Stone and McCary secretly tied the knot in 2020.

In September 2020, a source confirmed to People that McCary and Stone had secretly gotten married earlier in the year. Rumors had been swirling about their marital status after Stone appeared to be wearing a wedding ring during a video-chat interview with Reese Witherspoon in May 2020.
