Emma Stone and Dave McCary Have Reportedly Grown Closer "In a Way They Never Expected"

Emma Stone's Cruella de Vil character in Disney's new Cruella movie may be in love with all things fashion, but the actress behind the villain has a different true love — and his name is Dave McCary.

While not much is known about Emma and Dave's love story (the two are usually pretty private), we do know some things based on social media posts and what "insiders" and "sources" have told various outlets over the years.

According to Cosmopolitan, their story begins back in 2016 on the set of Saturday Night Live. Emma was hosting SNL for the third time ahead of La La Land's release date in December of 2016 (she won an Oscar for her role in the film), while Dave worked as a writer and director for the comedy sketch show. In particular, Dave was the director for the sketch "Wells for Boys," where Emma plays a mom. Besides that sketch, Dave is credited on IMDB as a writer for SNL between 2014 and 2018 and for the show's "Weekend Update" sketch series in 2017.

As Cosmopolitan reports, rumors started swirling in June of 2017 that the two were an item after they were spotted leaving the premiere of the film Brigsby Bear, which Dave directed.

By October of that same year, Page Six broke that Emma and Dave were together and had been dating for months. What's more, they were reportedly caught kissing at an SNL afterparty in May (though, again, neither Emma nor SNL's reps commented on the hearsay at the time).

Apart from a few tabloid reports here and there — like the fact that in 2018, US Weekly insiders saw them "attached at the hip" during a 2018 holiday party — not much is known about their dating life. That said, the happy couple did strike a pose with Bradley Cooper at the Screen Actor Guild Awards. They also attended a Golden State Warriors basketball game in January of 2019 and later were spotted and photographed at the 2019 Met Gala After Party in New York City in May. In other words, they weren't totally secretive.

Then, before we all knew it, Dave announced that he and Emma were engaged in an Instagram post on December 4, 2019. Alas, Page Six reported in March that like so many 2020 engaged couples, the two had decided to postpone their wedding.

But months later, in September of 2020, Us Weekly published photos of Emma and Dave wearing what looked like matching gold wedding bands, seemingly confirming that the two had secretly tied the knot. A source confirmed to People that fall that the actress and director had, in fact, gotten married. To this day, we don't have details about what Emma and Dave's nuptials entailed.

In January of 2021, a source confirmed to E! News that Emma was expecting a baby. Ironically, in an interview with Elle in 2018, Emma explained that her perspective about kids had changed from when she was younger.

"I never babysat or anything. As a teenager, I was like, I'm never getting married, I'm never having kids," Emma told the magazine. "And then I got older and I was like, I really want to get married, I really want to have kids."

On March 26, 2021, People reported that Emma's wish came true, as she and Dave welcomed a baby girl. Though the low-key couple has kept largely to themselves after becoming parents, sources have indicated that they are in a very happy place at the moment.

"Having a baby has brought them closer in a way they never expected,” an insider told Us Weekly.

Meanwhile, a source told People, "They are a very grounded and private couple and were ready for a family ... Emma is close to her family and good friends but not the type to flaunt her personal life. Dave respects that about her and is the same way. They have a great life together and support each other."

The source also later added: “[Emma] always has a huge smile when she is with Dave.”
