She could, of course, have worn a sapphire in honor of the engagement ring Prince Charles gave Princess Diana, a moment now immortalized in the latest season of The Crown.

But Emma Corrin, the actress who portrayed Diana, chose another stone, perhaps in homage to one of Diana’s even more beloved pieces, one that became her signature and an emblem of her singular and independent style. The Cartier emerald earrings and ring chosen by Corrin for tonight’s Golden Globes virtual red carpet and ceremony will surely inspire comparisons to the Queen Mary’s Emerald choker and that unforgettable moment in 1985 while on a tour with her husband in Australia when Diana dared to take the royal jewel and wear it as a headband.

The piece that once belonged to legendary royal jewelry collector Queen Mary was given to Princess Diana as a wedding gift from the Queen who, it has been noted, does not favor chokers. Princess Diana made the choker, which had been created from a gift of emeralds by the jeweler Garrard in 1921, a trademark. And as it was a lifetime loan, Diana wore it even after her time as an official royal had ended, including to her last birthday party at the Tate Gallery in London in July 1997. The Queen Mary Art Deco emerald choker is now back in the royal jewelry collection.
