Despite growing up in the golden age of YouTube, I can't say I'm a fan of vloggers. The format just never *clicked* for me, and unlike YouTube power users, I don't have a queue of creators I regularly check in with. That said, Emma Chamberlain is the exception. I can watch her channel for hours on end and, in fact, have done so on many occasions.

While she originally built a following on her relatable "day in the life" videos shot during her high school years, Chamberlain's current projects are much closer to short films than standard YouTube videos with their artistic shots and minimal chatting. Over the years, her approach to content has changed—today, you're more likely to find a BTS look at Fashion Week on her feed than a glimpse at the life of a typical teen—but the feeling that you're catching up with a good friend remains.

In short, Chamberlain has somehow transcended the "YouTuber" genre while still retaining her loyal fans, which is quite a feat in today's volatile social media landscape. Sure, she's a bonafide fashion darling, sitting in the front row at shows like Miu Miu and hosting the Met Gala red carpet. But she also created an intimate and introspective podcast, Anything Goes With Emma Chamberlain that speaks directly to her community.

Most recently, she joined the ranks of Lancôme's iconic slate of ambassadors, starring in the brand's video series, How Do You Say Beauty in French?, which just came back for season two. In honor of the first episode, Byrdie caught up with Chamberlain to chat about her beauty essentials, her winter fashion mood, and more.

The One Thing She Loves About Beauty

"My relationship with [beauty] has gotten so much healthier over the years. When I was younger, my beauty routine was rooted in insecurity for the most part—wanting to fit in and not feeling good. The teen years and tween years are tough. That was challenging. Whereas now, it's more about using my face as a canvas.

"Ultimately, I just love fashion. It's a hobby of mine. At the end of the day, beauty is a part of that. I also think of it as not being the perfect thing you see on Instagram. It's actually very different from that. It's somebody's spirit combined with the way that they choose to express themselves, and that's very special. I try to find that within myself as well."

The One Look That Makes Her Feel Most Like Herself

"A super light base—sometimes, just concealer. I love bronzing it up. The powder bronzer is so good. And I put that on the lid, too. [I like] putting it everywhere. Sort of a darker, rosy brown lip liner with a gloss. Love. And a brown mascara.

"It's very natural. You can still see my freckles. You can still see my dark circles. But it's just opening the eyes a little bit, carving it out a little more with the bronzer, giving me a bit of a sharper lip. That's when I feel the most me...in a look like that. But I also love playing, too. When I get to do fun, crazy looks, sometimes I'll feel really me in that, too. But day-to-day, that's the look."

The One Beauty Products That's Always In Her Bag

"Always a lip. I don't feel [myself] without some sort of lip. I wish I could name just one, but I always have a different one. It depends on the day. Sometimes, it's a tinted gloss to give a little pop. Sometimes, it's a full lip liner, lipstick...everything. Sometimes, it's just a liner and a gloss—it changes all the time. But girl, me without a lip? I don't know who that is! It's always something different [in my bag], it's like a little buffet."

The One Thing She Does Every Morning

"I wake up, I have my coffee. I love getting a little movement in the morning. I'm a morning exercise girl. So, I get a little sweat in, and then I come home, and I do the shower and the full skincare [routine]. That consists of a lot of hydrating products—pretty much the whole Genifique line is going on my face.

"[For exercise] you have to find what works for you. It has to be fun. I do like to get my ass kicked, though. I love a boot camp vibe. I want to be running, lifting weights, and being crazy. It's so hard that then, everything else the rest of the day, I'm like, 'This is easy.' It's like torture in a way, but I enjoy it now; I've taught myself to. I also love hot yoga and hot pilates—so L.A., but I just like sweating."

Her Winter Outfit Formula

"Black boot, black top, the pants can be whatever. That's sort of the formula. I'm all about the outfit sandwich. It's just my formula for everything. And so I think that's what it's gonna be. It's like, some sort of sweater or turtleneck that matches the boot, and then the rest we can play. That's the move."

"But I also think I might have some fun with bright colors this winter because I was in this darker grays and blacks mode. I feel like this is kind of a dark winter...let's lighten it up a little bit! I've been wanting to play with color again, so something's happening."

Her Best Vintage Find

"Any good pair of vintage Levi's. Finding a pair that fits is not a dime a dozen—it's impossible. Finding a good pair of jeans, it's tough. So when you find it, you hold onto it."

The One Thing That Keeps Her Grounded While Travelling

"Definitely coming up with a little routine. There are a few things that are really important to me. I need my coffee in the morning, so I need to find my spot. When I'm in New York, I have my spot—everywhere I go, I have my spot. Weirdly, exercising—Where can I go on a little jog and experience [the city]? Those two things keep me really grounded: having my little coffee routine and getting in that movement.

"I like having that meditative time. The rest of the day can be whatever if I have that morning routine, and I get everything done that I need to get done to feel good. So the rest of the day can sort of be random, and I feel like, 'Well, I already did everything.'"

Her Winter Skin Saviors

"I've been loving an oil...at night, doing a thin layer of the oil over the top of my night cream. It seems like a lot, but when I'm really dry, hydrating the skin and locking it in with that oil makes a huge difference. I don't necessarily need that all year round, though.

"Also, I don't use eye cream every night. In wintertime, we're throwing on the Génifique eye cream because it's getting cold out, and it's getting a little crispy. Also, for sure, [adding] thoughtful lip products that are more hydrating. We're ditching the matte lip and going for more hydrating lip products—whether that's a balm or just like a cream lipstick. I love the rosy balm; it goes on clear, and then it turns a deeper pink. It's so fun; it's like a mood ring. And, it's very hydrating."

On Staying Inspired On Youtube

"Two things: Number one, giving myself some space from [Youtube] when I need it, which is a controversial take. But If I need space from it, that's what helps me recharge. Also, living life outside of it. Because that gives me things to talk about, that gives me new perspectives on life. And that's ultimately what gives me something to say in a video.

"And it might not necessarily be anything groundbreaking. In fact, it usually is not. But when you're so wrapped up in making videos, then you actually have nothing to make a video about anymore. So you have to live a life outside of it and develop your life and personality. And that goes for my podcast as well. I need to give myself some space from it when I can. The biggest, most important advice for creative people is that you need to live a life outside of it."

The One Way Her Relationship With Social Media Has Changed

"Learning my boundaries, because you can really take it too far. So it's actually pulling back from [social media] and being more intentional with how I use it. And that's been huge for me, but I still waste so much fucking time on it, and I try not to."

Her Current Coffee Order

"If I'm out, it's iced Americano a lot of time, but if not, a hot latte with almond milk, recently. Which is super weird—I used to get iced, but now I get hot. At home, I make an iced latte—two shots of espresso, and homemade nut milk in my Nut Pod creamer. It's sick; it's unbelievable."
