Emily Ratajkowski has spoken out criticizing Netflix’s new Marilyn Monroe film Blonde in a recent TikTok video.

The movie has been the subject of backlash since its release on September 23 (later dropping on Netflix on the 28th). Critics have claimed that the film, which fictionalizes Marilyn’s life, focuses too much on her suffering. What’s more, viewers have also called out Blonde’s depiction of sexual assault and abortion.

Model and actor Emily took to TikTok to criticize the film for “fetishizing” female suffering, although she admitted that she hasn’t yet watched the full movie.

In a video now viewed more than 2 million times, she told viewers, “So I’ve been hearing a lot about this Marilyn Monroe movie Blonde, which I haven’t seen yet, but I’m not surprised to hear that it’s yet another movie fetishizing female pain, even in death.”

Emily went on, “We love to fetishize female pain. Look at Amy Winehouse, look at Britney Spears, look at the way we obsess over [Princess] Diana’s death, the way we obsess over dead girls and serial killers.” She continued, “Watch any CSI episode, and it’s like this crazy fetishization of female pain and death.”

The actor then opened up about her experience of fetishizing “my own pain and my own hurt in my life,” saying, “I’m like this, ‘oh, fucked-up girl,’ whatever.” She went on to tell viewers, “I think we all need to be a little more pissed off,” adding the caption, “So done with the fetishization of female pain and suffering. Bitch Era 2022.”

Emily ended the video by saying, “I’m gonna be pissed off when I see this movie, I already know it. But it’s nothing new, and yeah, I’m just gonna get angry.”

While many viewers have criticized Blonde, others have defended the project, claiming that it remains faithful to author Joyce Carol Oates’s book (which the film is based on) and that it’s largely intended to be a fictional take on Marilyn’s life.

Blonde is streaming now on Netflix.
