It's safe to say that wearing boots over pants is one of the most divisive trends right now, given the combination runs the risk of instantly transforming the wearer into an ancient clam-digger, or a rumpled equestrian. And yet, Emily Ratajkowski boldly nailed the look while walking her dog in downtown New York this morning. The model-actress stepped out in a simple white tank with a pair of high-waisted faded jeans that were cinched with a rich brown leather belt that highlighted her whittled waist. Under her arm was the model-beloved ’90s-style shoulder bag. But the real standout here? It wasn't her puppy Colombo, with his wise-looking, old soul face—but rather Ratajkowski’s mustard yellow knee-high boots by Rag & Bone, that she pulled up over her jeans. Though the outfit could have easily skewed dated, the sartorial saving grace here was the boot's kicky heel that literally elevated the full get-up.

Ratajkowski seems to be taking cues from the Spring 2020 shows, where the boot-over-pant look has been cropping up regularly. The trend made a cameo at Maryam Nassir Zadeh, where a model wore a pair of cream cargo pants with a pair of knee-skimming black boots. At Marc Jacobs, Bella Hadid strutted out in lavender jeans with pale leather gray boots that went up to the knees. The look was even spotted across the pond today at London Fashion Week, this time on the runway of Richard Malone. The designer showed the boot-and-pant unification in a much more ornate way, with the cuffs of silk boots folded over and flaring out à la a Renaissance prince. And maybe the runways are also taking a cue from Princess Diana, who has emerged as a fashion influence over the past few seasons, most notably at Off-White; after all, she famously wore boots with both jeans and sweatpants. And how timelessly chic is that?
