Emily Henderson Shares Her Favorite Pieces from Target’s New Bed and Bath Collection

Designer Emily Henderson is our go-to gal for stylish pieces that don’t break the bank. As a Target home spokesperson, she curates collections that can spruce up any room on a budget. Her outdoor patio makeover, gorgeous workspace, and woodland creature-inspired kids room are pure design magic and just reaffirm her ability to make any area look beautiful. We caught up with the decorista at nail salon Olive + June in Beverly Hills to talk about her favorites from Target’s new bed and bath collections.

Brit + Co: If you had $100 to spend at Target, what are your top product picks for making over a bedroom on a budget?

Emily Henderson: My best tip is to stick to simple styles for major pieces and layer on pieces that are more decorative for a refined, sophisticated look. For example, if you’re redoing your bedroom, keep the bedsheets simple, but look for shams or decorative pillows with patterns and color. Search for a pillow that’s 20 to 40 inches long. I love lumbar pillows with different textures.

B+C: For mamas with style, how can you design a kid-friendly bathroom?

EH: I’d suggest buying accessories that are kid-friendly that work seamlessly with your style. Buy baskets and bins for clothes storage. Choose a color palette that is adult-and kid-friendly like pastels, which work nicely with other kid-friendly colors. Decant kid products like shampoo and lotions into pretty bottles like rose gold bathroom accessories. Colorful plastic bins that fit bath toys and other items keep your items accessible while still being neat and clean. Hooks are helpful. Kids tend to like licensed products with cartoon characters, which can often be in loud patterns, but storing those items in pretty containers [can help] you reduce the visual clutter.

B+C: What are your best tips for anyone with a small bedroom or bathroom?

EH: Start with a neutral color palette. Big pieces with bold colors and patterns can make a room look smaller. Instead, layer your bed with distinctive, stylish pillows. You can’t go wrong with mixing medium blues and greens. Another great small bedroom or bathroom tip: Buy furniture that can double as storage such as the Threshold Hamilton Horizontal Bookcase ($135). A large rug underneath furniture to ground the main seating area makes a small room look bigger. Your eye likes things that are calm and symmetrical so reducing the color palette will make you feel calmer.

B+C: What are some common mistakes with bedroom decorating that you would suggest fixing?

EH: Keep things minimal. Matching nightstands and matching lamps, like the Project 62 Pink Table Lamp with Marble Base ($55), makes the bedroom feel less chaotic. For refreshing your bedroom, I recommend doing a massive purge and [donating] items that are making your space feel cluttered. Adding a few new pieces, like decorative pillows or colorful accessories, can make any home feel refreshed.

1. Project 62 Pink Geo Lumbar Pillow ($25): Henderson loves the different textures in this lumbar pillow and suggests layering two of these on a bed with a neutral color palette.

2. Threshold Wood Ladder ($50): This ladder can add a spa-like touch to a home bathroom. Store linens over the ladder rungs and lean it against the wall for a modern twist on a normal towel rack.

3. Project 62 Gold Wire Basket ($20): Henderson loves pretty baskets as a glam way to store items in a bedroom or bathroom. She recommends using these gold baskets to store accessories like hand or bath towels.

4. Project 62 Modern Wall Tapestry ($30): “You can’t go wrong with mixing medium blues and greens,” says Henderson. This simple tapestry contains both hues and can be hung in a bathroom or bedroom as pretty wall art.

5. Project 62 Rose Gold Glass Canister ($10): Henderson recommends decanting your beauty products like cotton balls, cotton swabs, or makeup remover pads into pretty canisters. They ultimately help reduce visual clutter.
