The first reactions to the upcoming film The Fall Guy told us that it's set to be a hit.

With a Steven Spielberg stamp of approval and an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the Ryan Gosling/Emily Blunt-led flick is climbing people's most anticipated lists ahead of its May release.

In a new interview with Total Film, Emily Blunt revealed the inspiration behind her character, Jody Moreno.

Blunt said, "In the original script, she was quite severe...that sort of tough director", but later drafts added "the warmth and charm" that is present in the film now.

But who was the director that inspired Blunt? None other than the 1.4 billion dollar grossing director of Barbie, Greta Gerwig.

"I guess there's a little Greta in there," Blunt said. "She was a mix of a few people I'd met and pulled from."

The Fall Guy features Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Hannah Waddingham, Teresa Palmer, Stephanie Hsu and Winston Duke alongside Blunt and Gosling in the action comedy about an ex-stuntman who returns to service when the star of a mega-budget studio movie - directed by his ex - goes missing.

Critics who caught the film when it played at the SXSW Film Festival are calling it "ridiculously fun", "buzzing with energy" and "a thrilling spectacle".

The Fall Guy hits theaters May 3.
