Emilia Clarke Turned Down 'Fifty Shades Of Grey' For The Most Feminist Reason

From ELLE

The Mother Of Dragons might have had a fateful end in Game of Thrones, but Emilia Clarke doesn't regret taking on the role for almost a decade.

In fact, the Brit actress actually turned down a major film role to continue playing Daenerys in the, now legendary, TV series. And we reckon you might have heard of it - a little film called Fifty Shades Of Grey?

Speaking recently to The Hollywood Reporter for their Drama Actress round table, Clarke opened up about turning down the opportunity to play Anastasia Steele in the infamous film trilogy.

When asked about what happened, the 32-year-old explained that she didn't want to take on a role with so much nudity in again. As any GoT fan will know, Clarke's character, Daenerys Targaryen closed season 1 in a dramatic scene where she emerged naked from flames, flanked by her newly born dragons.

Since then, the Me Before You star has shied away from on screen nudity, explaining, 'Well, Sam [Taylor-Johnson, the director] is a magician. I love her, and I thought her vision was beautiful. But the last time that I was naked on camera on [Game of Thrones] was a long time ago, and yet it is the only question that I ever get asked because I am a woman.

'And it's annoying as hell and I'm sick and tired of it because I did it for the character - I didn't do it so some guy could check out my t*ts, for God's sake.' Preach.

Clarke continued on to discuss her understandable worries about her on-screen nudity leading to being typecast because of the fact that she's a woman:

'So, that coming up, I was like, "I can't." I did a minimal amount and I'm pigeonholed for life, so me saying yes to that, where the entire thing is about sensuality and sex and being naked and all of that stuff,' she said.
