SuperFly 's Trevor Jackson on Tan Vans, His Favorite Affordable Jeans, and the Deodorant His Grandma Buys for Him

A funny thing happened to Grown-ish star Trevor Jackson this past year: as his career got bigger and bigger, his stuff started to get smaller. His grooming products shrunk down to travel-size, and his bulky luggage became a compact three-in-one roller, backpack, and duffel. Jackson, a passionate musician—who performed at the Obama White House—even took a shrink ray to his guitar so he could tuck it away on a plane.

Fortunately for his fans, this chronic condition may only get worse. The actor made a name for himself as the rat-tailed activist and maybe-they-will-maybe-they-won't romantic interest on Black-ish spinoff Grown-ish, opposite Yara Shahidi, which has been renewed for a second season. And now he’s starring in the new Future-produced movie SuperFly, a remake of 1972’s Super Fly, which comes out later this week. The movie, set in Atlanta, stars Jackson as Youngblood Priest, a slick career criminal who's trying to get out of the drug-dealing game.

We caught Jackson while he was shooting the film, thousands of miles away from his home in Los Angeles, to ask what a movie star in the making can’t travel without.

The High-Low Grooming Pair

“I have this travel-size oil from my friend Will. It's called Sandalwood scent. It's in a little vial. You wouldn't believe the amount of compliments I got off this. Now I can't travel without it. It's not too much. It's the perfect balance. You know how people will wear cologne, and it's good but it's a lot—or they could have used more? This is the perfect in-between. You're not trying too hard, but you also don't smell bad.”

“My grandma just got me some Speed Stick. I was at her house and she’s got a drawer full of them. I think she got it at the dollar store or somewhere. She freaking loves Speed Stick. She's literally that type of grandma that buys everything in bulk to make sure when people come over it’s there.”

The Multi-Purpose Bag With a Message

“I have this duffel bag that I like to use. It's from Beyu. Their company is all about individuality, believing in oneself. It's a duffel bag that turns into a backpack, it turns into an over-the-shoulder bag, and it's pretty dope. I was actually performing at a show in Atlanta on my last trip, and a friend of a friend came backstage with a whole bunch of them and so they gifted me one. It was amazing. After they told me about what they stood for, I totally had to have one.”

Chelsea Boots for Running, Dancing, and Other Craziness

“I'm not trying to spend $1,500 on a shoe. That's just me, because I'm always dancing or running or doing some craziness and messing up sneakers. Expensive shoes are not the goal. House of Hounds are nice boots. They have a lot of different styles.”

The On-the-Go Headphones

“You know, make calls, listen to music, and just be more remote while getting to wherever I need to get. The AirPods, they’re not bad.”

The Shoes

“I will honestly say, the one thing on the list I've gotta have is Vans. I cannot go anywhere without a pair of Vans. I used to skate when I was younger. I think it's just the comfort. I don't like shoes too much. If I forgot shoes, I'd go barefoot everywhere. [My favorite Vans are] my tan suede ones. My mother and all my friends try to throw them away because they're so old and so ripped up and torn, but I will not get rid of them. I wear them everyday. I got them for a show. I was performing and I needed a pair of tan Vans and I got those and I was like, ‘I want to wear these for the rest of my life.’”

The Cheap Pants That Leave More Money for Taco Bell

“I gotta travel with some black Zara jeans. They dress up or they can be casual. I believe in just getting the job done. I try not to spend too much on clothing. I prefer spending money on something practical. I'll spend $80 at Taco Bell. That's where I splurge. I splurge on food and maybe shoes I'll probably spend a little more. But when it comes to regular clothes I'll go to Goodwill or I'll go to the grocery store and get some $5 jeans.”

The Built-to-Travel Guitar

“I have to travel with my guitar. I have something travel size that I can tuck away without annoying my travel neighbors and passengers. I wanted a small one that I could just practice when I was at the airport in a small confined space.”

The Plane Travel Necessity

“I gotta travel with my Bible. I pray before I walk onto any plane. When you go through the little walking thing and right when you step onto the plane, I tap the outside of the plane and say like, ‘Please take us on this plane safely.’”
