Stranger Things Fans Already Have Tons of Theories About the Season 3 Poster

After months of waiting, Netflix finally confirmed that Stranger Things will be returning for a third season on July 4, 2019 earlier this week. Naturally, fans have already started speculating about what's to come—and many believe important clues regarding potential plot lines are hiding in the show's newly unveiled promotional image. (Take a look at it, below.)

In celebration of the show's upcoming return, Netflix shared a new image of the cast on Twitter. The photo, which promises that "one summer can change everything," features some members of the cast watching fireworks, but Reddit users have also pointed out potential clues hiding behind the scenes. One theory posits that we're seeing the group of friends through the eyes of a potential new monster, while others pointed out that it could be a "Giant Spider from the Upside-Down" and the reason Will and Eleven are looking back is because they're the only ones who can see the monster.

Other fans pointed out that rats appear to be an important part of the new season, writing, "That thing composed of rat corpses is either roots or the legs of some creature." In an additional Reddit thread, user tsacharias pointed out the many rats that appear to be hiding in the poster. One user theorized that "they’ll help spread whatever was left in the tunnels to humans." And another Reddit user pointed out that rats also appear in the previously released season three titles, writing, "There’s at least three episode titles that I think have to do with the rats: The Mall Rats, The Sauna Test, and The Bite. But like people are saying, the rats are probably transmitting whatever was left over from season 2 in the tunnels."

As for additional theories, one explains that clues could be hiding in the design of their socks, writing, "Could there also be any relevance to the fact that basically all of them have a variation of striped socks, whether it be 2 or 3 stripes all spaced differently? Maybe some type of code." Others have pointed out that Eleven and Mike are wearing the colors blue and yellow, which some speculated is symbolic of the Ukrainian flag.

Unfortunately, we'll have to wait until July to find out whether rats or a giant spider will cause any major problems for our fave Hawkins heroes, but we do know one thing — this season will be filled with fun. Netflix previously confirmed that Priah Ferguson (Erica) and Maya Hawke will be joining the cast, helping to rescue the residents of a small town who are constantly dealing with scarier and scarier forms of danger.
