SNL Returns with Bill Murray as Steve Bannon

Lately, SNL has seemed to struggle with the sheer volume of material the president and American politics give them every week, and at times is looks like they pull their punches in a effort to cover too many things at once. So the stakes get even higher for them when, as on Saturday, they return from several weeks of hiatus. But they managed a solid, focused cold open, successfully swiping at Fire and Fury author Michael Wolff and freshly-disgraced former Trump adviser Steven Bannon.

Bannon is usually played by a party store Halloween costume version of the grim reaper, but now he's been rebooted as Bill Murray with pounds of makeup. Or as Kate McKinnon's Mika Brzezinski put it, "I know you usually look like death, but this is death warmed over."

Murray appears next to SNL alum Fred Armisen as Michael Wolff, and constantly refers to himself as "the Bannon cannon," "the king-maker," or "Ozymandias." After singing his own praises and announcing the formation of the Bannon dynasty, he launches into his plans for what's next:

I convinced this country to elect Donald. And I can do it again. Already auditioning prospects: Logan Paul. Martin Shkreli. The Subway guy, Jared Fogle. He's back. He's electable. It's time for America to slide down the Bannon-ster.
