In The Gospel According to André , a Fashion-Industry Legend Goes Back to His Roots

André Leon Talley, legendary former Vogue staffer, gets the documentary treatment.

Disciples old and new are readying for the rapture that is The Gospel According to André, the forthcoming feature-length film about Vogue’s beloved former staffer and occasional contributor André Leon Talley. What’s refreshing about Kate Novack’s documentary, which premieres in the U.S. on May 25, is that she dwells less on Talley’s famously flamboyant pronouncements on high fashion than on his upbringing and the quiet haven of his elegant house and garden in White Plains, New York.

We visit his childhood home in North Carolina, where he was raised by his strict, churchgoing grandmother; hang out with his former schoolmates; and learn about the path of dedication and study he followed to become an authority on aesthetics. This André is not simply the pharaoh of fabulosity—he is reflective, poignant, and heartfelt. Get a first look at the film’s trailer, above.
