Game of Thrones ’ Emilia Clarke Says She Had a Hard Time With All the Negative Comments About Dany

This post contains major spoilers for the finale of Game of Thrones. Consider yourself warned.

It's hard to believe, but we are now living in a post–Game of Thrones world. Today the Internet will be flooded with hot takes about whether or not the show nailed the landing and characters ended up where they should have. (Spoiler: A lot of people don't think so.)

After more than eight years watching this epic show, fans have formed strong bonds with their favorites like Daenerys Targaryen. But there's likely no one who cares more about the Mother of Dragons than the woman who brought her to life onscreen, Emilia Clarke.

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Clarke admitted she cried when she read the final script. After all, Dany is killed by her lover-nephew Jon Snow after she laid waste to much of King's Landing with her remaining dragon, Drogon.

But more than that, Clarke says the negative commentary on the Internet about the show has also taken its toll on her. “I have my own feelings [about the storyline], and it’s peppered with my feelings about myself,” she told Entertainment Weekly. "It's gotten to that point now where you read [comments about] the character you [have to remind yourself], 'They’re not talking about you, Emilia, they're talking about the character.'"

Luckily, she also had her mom around for moral support. “I genuinely did this, and it’s embarrassing and I’m going to admit it to you,” Clarke said. “I called my mom and [said], 'I read the scripts and I don’t want to tell you what happens, but can you just talk me off this ledge? It really messed me up.’ And then I asked my mom and brother really weird questions. They were like: ‘What are you asking us this for? What do you mean do I think Daenerys is a good person? Why are you asking us that question? Why do you care what people think of Daenerys? Are you OK?’ And I’m all: ‘I’m fine!… But is there anything Daenerys could do that would make you hate her?’”

For what it's worth, I'll always love you, Daenerys of the House Targaryen, the First of Her Name, The Unburnt, Queen of the Andals, the Rhoynar and the First Men, Queen of Meereen, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Protector of the Realm, Lady Regent of the Seven Kingdoms, Breaker of Chains and Mother of Dragons.
