Sofia Coppola's Priscilla details the more human side of the enigma of Elvis. The A24 film was adapted from Priscilla Presley's memoir Elvis And Me, telling the story of the iconic singer from his ex-wife's perspective.

Even if you're a diehard Elvis fan, Priscilla's story sheds light on a completely new side of the Rock N' Roll king, one that was imperfect. The film's timeline begins around 1959, when the couple first met in Germany, and continues until Priscilla ultimately decides to leave her husband in the 1970s.

September 1959: Elvis and Priscilla meet at a party.

In 1957, Elvis was drafted into the military—at the height of his early career. He was stationed in West Germany, where Priscilla was also living with her family at the time.

Currie Grant, an air force officer, invited Priscilla to a party that Elvis was hosting. Priscilla's stepfather was stationed in the air force and knew Grant's commanding officer, so he allowed her to attend, per PEOPLE.

When the pair first met, Elvis—then 24—assumed Priscilla was finishing up high school. When the 14-year-old student informed him that she was only in ninth grade, he responded, "Why, you're just baby," Priscilla wrote in an essay for PEOPLE.

That night, the pair began what they initially described as a platonic relationship. On the third time they met, Elvis told Priscilla he'd treat her "like a sister." But he also, somewhat confusingly, gave Priscilla what she described as her "first real kiss," on that same night in 1959.

Fidelity and "innocence" were very important to Elvis, Priscilla shared in PEOPLE, which is why she believed he was so drawn to her at a young age. Still, Priscilla maintains that she and Elvis "never had sex" during this time, per Rolling Stone.

March 1960: Elvis leaves Germany.

After months of spending nearly every night together, according to Priscilla, Elvis left Germany on March 1, 1960, per Insider.

Priscilla described the day as devastating for her, but also said that Elvis requested that she didn't cry at his send off. "I didn't know if I was ever going to see him again," Priscilla later told Vogue.

Priscilla did not see Elvis for two years after he left Germany—and the pair only communicated sparsely by telephone. During this time, Elvis was also rumored to have a relationship with Nancy Sinatra, and photographers hounded Priscilla with details of the alleged affair, she wrote in PEOPLE.

Summer 1962: Priscilla visits Elvis in Los Angeles.

Finally, when Priscilla was 17, her parents allowed her to take a two-week summer trip to visit Elvis. At the time, Priscilla maintained that her relationship with Elvis was platonic to please her parents, she wrote in PEOPLE.

Although Elvis agreed to keep Priscilla in Los Angeles, the pair ended up traveling to Las Vegas for most of the trip.

December 1962: Priscilla moves to Memphis.

Several months after her summer trip with Elvis, Priscilla's parents allowed her to move to Memphis—on the stipulation that she would live with Elvis' father, and not directly with Elvis at Graceland. During this time, Elvis also gifted Priscilla a dog, which she later said she took "everywhere," per Vogue.

March 1963: Priscilla moves in with Elvis' father and stepmother.

This was not an ideal living situation for Priscilla. "I felt out of place in their home, and did not want to be an intrusion in their personal life," she wrote for PEOPLE.

Nonetheless, she finished her high school education at Immaculate Conception Cathedral School in Memphis, Tennessee. Priscilla also slyly moved her things into Graceland while Elvis was filming a movie in Los Angeles.

Summer 1963: Elvis cheats on Priscilla.

Shortly after Priscilla permanently relocated to Memphis, Elvis began filming Viva Las Vegas with actress Ann-Margret. The singer began having an affair with his co-star. Their behind-the-scenes relationship was no secret, and rumors began circulating that the pair was engaged, Priscilla wrote in her memoir.

Around this time, Priscilla found out about the affair, and reportedly threw a vase at a wall while confronting him, according to her memoir. She claimed Elvis told her, "I want a woman who's going to understand that things like this might just happen. Are you going to be her or not?"

December 1966: Elvis proposes to Priscilla.

Despite their tumultuous relationship, Priscilla and Elvis stayed together. Eventually, Elvis proposed in December 1966, per PEOPLE. Priscilla claimed the occasion was a surprise to her, and that she was content with their relationship prior to their engagement, per a Ladies Home Journal archive.

"Even though we were perfectly content the way we were, at that time it wasn't nice for [unmarried] people to live together," Priscilla told the publication.

May 1, 1967: Elvis and Priscilla get married.

To the public eye, Priscilla and Elvis' wedding may have seemed like an abrupt occasion, but it had been planned. The ceremony was only eight minutes long, and took place in Las Vegas, according to Insider.

There were only 14 people present during the actual wedding ceremony, and 100 guests allotted at the post-ceremony celebration, Priscilla told Vogue. The couple had a larger wedding reception in Graceland after their honeymoon in Palm Springs. Priscilla also got pregnant not long after their wedding.

December 1967: Elvis asks Priscilla for a trial separation.

When Priscilla was seven months pregnant, Elvis came to her "out of the blue" and asked for a trial separation, she wrote in her memoir. Priscilla said that her pregnancy was not planned, and it seemed to put stress on their partnership.

However, the separation was quickly forgotten, and Elvis changed his tune only a few days later, Priscilla told the Orlando Sentinel. "I don't think Elvis really intended to leave me. It wasn't his style. I later realized he too had questions about how a baby would affect his life," she said.

February 1, 1968: Lisa Marie Presley is born.

Priscilla gave birth to the couple's only daughter, Lisa Marie, on February 1, 1968. Priscilla has said in hindsight that the version of Elvis in the delivery room was the man she loved, per the Orlando Sentinel. He was "thrilled" and "already in love with [Lisa Marie]," she told the publication.

A year later, Elvis made an iconic comeback and returned to the stage after 10 years. Priscilla supported his decision to tour shortly after their daughter arrived.

1972: Priscilla has an affair (amid Elvis' several affairs).

By 1970, the pair's relationship had become rocky. Elvis continued to tour, and pursue affairs. During this time, Priscilla relocated to Los Angeles with Lisa Marie. She took up karate, and had an affair with her instructor, Mike Stone, she confessed in her memoir.

Priscilla continued to see Mike Stone after she and Elvis officially separated. They dated for four years, per Insider.

February 1972: Elvis and Priscilla separate.

Priscilla left Elvis in early 1972. Over a decade later, in 1985, Priscilla told Barbara Walters that by leaving her husband, she found herself. Their separation was amicable, and the pair remained friends until Elvis' death in 1977.

In fact, when their divorce was finalized in 1973, the pair were seen leaving the courthouse together, hand-in-hand. "It was like we were never divorced," Priscilla told PEOPLE in 1978.

August 1977: Elvis dies.

A few years after Priscilla and Elvis officially divorced, the King died on August 15, 1977. Following his death, Priscilla took control of Graceland and turned it into a tourist attraction to save the icon's estate from bankruptcy.

In 1985, she published Elvis and Me, which serves as the source material for Sofia Coppola's new film.
