Ellen DeGeneres Says She’s Considering Ending Her Daytime Talk Show
Ellen DeGeneres has been bringing the world a dose of positivity through her talk show for 15 years. But the comedian revealed in a new interview that it might be time to move on and she’s considering retiring from daytime TV in the near future.
In an interview with the New York Times, DeGeneres said that she’s going back and forth on whether or not to end her show and pursue more acting and comedy projects, such as her upcoming Netflix stand-up special, set to be released on December 18. She also said that although she recently extended her contract with The Ellen DeGeneres Show until the summer of 2020, she considered declining.
Portia de Rossi, for one, would love to see DeGeneres branch out. “I just think she’s such a brilliant actress and standup that it doesn’t have to be this talk show for her creativity,” de Rossi, who has been married to DeGeneres for 10 years, told the Times. “There are other things she could tackle.”
DeGeneres’ brother Vance, on the other hand, is in favor of her continuing the show and has reportedly changed his sister’s mind about leaving on more than one occasion.
For now, at least, she’s sticking around and pursuing other endeavors when she can. The stand-up special, her first in 15 years, is one such side project. “I wanted to show all of me,” she said. “The talk show is me, but I’m also playing a character of a talk-show host. There’s a tiny, tiny bit of difference.”
DeGeneres’ stand-up special, Relatable, premieres on Netflix on Tuesday, December 18.
