TV personality Ellen DeGeneres has always had an eye for design (as well as a hidden talent for flipping homes!). Her popular lifestyle brand ED by Ellen features an abundance of stylish home decor and furnishings for all rooms of the house, and she's decorated many stylish abodes for herself and wife Portia de Rossi. Now, the longtime talk show host is at the helm of a new design project: DeGeneres has created her own furniture design competition where seven up-and-coming designers will go head-to-head for a chance at $100,000.

This televised showdown, dubbed Ellen's Next Great Designer, will stream exclusively on HBO Max starting April 22. Hosting and judging alongside her will be actor Scott Foley. Meanwhile, interior designer Brigette Romanek and contemporary artist and designer Fernando Mastrangelo will also join the judging panel.

According to the series description on HBO Max, this competition will operate a little bit differently than most we've seen before. It reads that the competitors will be given "the chance to push their creativity to the limit" as they compete "in innovative furniture-making challenges from studios in their hometowns." Let's re-read that. A design showdown where the contestants don't go head-to-head in the same room? That's not something you see every day. Despite the unconventional setup, DeGeneres will appear in each episode to surprise the contestants and the judges.

Last week, the trailer was released and already things look wildly intense. It's unknown what types of furnishings and/or challenges the designers been tasked with, but the pieces shown in the clip are truly unique. Also, the contestants appear to all be in it to win it. "Winning would be life-changing. I'm pretty broke in my business right now," one contestant says. Another designer shares: "Every minute I'm not working on that piece, could potentially spell failure."

Well, that's definitely a change of pace from Ellen! You can watch the trailer below.
