Ellen DeGeneres is bringing her passion project to TV. Over a year after her eponymous talk show ended, the comedian is returning to television with a Discovery Channel special titled Saving the Gorillas: Ellen's Next Adventure.

The Finding Dory star's "passion and commitment to animals, and admiration for world-renowned primatologist, Dian Fossey, are featured" in the documentary, which follows the former talk show host as she fulfills a dream of hers.

DeGeneres dreamt of protecting the legacy of the late Fossey—whom she's previously called a "hero" of hers—by building The Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund in Rwanda.

“Every single thing has led me to just have a big enough platform to say, ‘Look at work Dian Fossey did,’” DeGeneres says in the special. “There’s nothing that keeps you more present, more in the moment, than sitting with gorillas.”

What is the special about?

The Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund opened in February of 2022. It started as a "nice birthday gift" from Portia de Rossi to her wife, but turned "into something bigger than anybody could have imagined," according to Discovery.

The couple went on to embark on what is described as "one of the largest architectural and landscaping projects in the history of Rwanda" and encountered "challenges like volcanoes, earthquakes, and a global pandemic" along the way.

Per Discovery, the special, which follows Ellen as she brings The Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund to life, "is an adventure filled with laughter, tears, and experiences none of them ever dreamed they'd have. At the center of it is Ellen, doing things that are not only life-changing for hundreds of others, but that affect an entire nation and give the mountain gorillas a hope for survival greater than they've ever had before."
