Elle Fanning Is Inspired by Grace Kelly on the Met Gala Red Carpet

Elle Fanning is going royal with her Met Gala look. The actress is wearing a 1955 Carier Grain de Café coffee bean necklace, "the one that Grace Kelly wore in the royal portrait," she said on the red carpet. Fanning clarified it may not be the exact necklace, but it's from that time.

The Grain de Café collection first launched in 1938, becoming famous due to Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn in the 50s. The line was reintroduced by Cartier in 2022.

Kelly wore the necklace on many important occasions, including on an official visit to the White House in 1961 to meet President John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy.

"The beans were usually created in gold, and sometimes coral, occasionally accented with a diamond. The Cartier café design featured an unusual ribbing, chosen to give the gold additional texture," vintage jewelry dealer Lee Siegelson told Town & Country in 2020. "There were bracelets, earrings, brooches, and short collar necklaces made with the motif, a clever take on the popularity of floral jewels in the 1950s."

Today, Cartier announced Fanning as a new global ambassador of the new grain de café collection. Fanning said in a statement, "The Grain de Café collection embodies so much of what makes Cartier’s style and savoir-faire unique; from exquisite gold work to the precious transformation of an everyday object. It is an honor to become the face of a creation that brings together elegance, glamour and radiant femininity."

In addition to the Cartier jewelry, Fanning is also wearing an outfit designed by Andreas Kronthaler at Vivienne Westwood. The dress is based on the moment Fanning met Karl Lagerfeld when she was 13 years old. As she wrote on Instagram before the evening, "For my portrait, he decided to place a daisy crown on my head and put the jacket over the white dress I arrived in."

It's a busy month for Fanning; she is set to return as Catherine the Great in The Great season three, which premieres next week on Hulu.
