Ella Mai Steps Out With a Sky-High Sculptural Bun at the Billboard Music Awards

Ella Mai was dripping with swagger as she served up full-on '90s vibes on the 2019 Billboard Music Awards red carpet. It was, after all, the rising British singer’s big night, with seven nominations including "Top R&B Artist" and "Top R&B Song" for her infectious hit “Boo’d Up.”
Mai channeled the '90s not just with her sleek black turtleneck and leather shorts suit combination, but with a sculptural updo that defied the laws of gravity. Slicked back and slung high, hairstylist Kahh Spence got playful with Mai’s baby hairs, too; letting stick-straight wisps graze her full brows while curling others intricately along the hairline using Ogx's Aspen Extract Texture Molding Paste. "For Ella, we always go big with her hair," says Spence. "With her super sleek high top knot and natural tendrils framing her eyes, she was very '90s power woman tonight." Making just as striking a statement in the back, Spence punctuated the towering style with three crystal barrettes stacked parallel just above the nape to dazzling effect.
Naturally luminous thanks to her trusty five-minute skincare routine, Mai completed her look with a deep crimson mouth and copper smoky eyes accented with iridescent gold shimmer dabbed on the inner corners. Topping the charts with sexy, sweet love ballads and serving up beauty looks that inspire, Mai continues to master fierce femininity in more ways than one.
