Elizabeth Olsen on Criticism of Marvel Films: “It Takes Away From Our Crew”

Elizabeth Olsen has responded to the criticism made about Marvel films, stating that the comments speak badly of the crew more than anything.

In a recent interview with The Independent, the actress, who reprises her role as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, shared that the crew who work on Marvel movies are also the same people who work on award-winning films. “I’m not saying we’re making indie art films, but I just think it takes away from our crew, which bugs me,” Olsen said. “These are some of the most amazing set designers, costume designers, camera operators – I feel diminishing them with that kind of criticism takes away from all the people who do award-winning films, that also work on these projects."

She added that from the perspective of an actor, she understands "that there’s a different kind of performance that’s happening. But I do think throwing Marvel under the bus takes away from the hundreds of very talented crew people. That’s where I get a little feisty about that.”

Filmmakers such as Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola have been vocal with their criticisms of Marvel films, with the former calling the movies "not cinema" and comparing them to theme parks. Meanwhile, Coppola labelled the films — alongside Dune and No Time to Die — formulaic, "A Marvel picture is one prototype movie that is made over and over and over and over and over again to look different.”

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is in theaters now and has earned around $450 million USD in the box office.
