Eliud Kipchoge, Brigid Kosgei Win 2019 London Marathon

KIPCHOGE I had the confidence to win for the fourth time, which I have accomplished. KIPCHOGE, KOSGEI WIN 2019 LONDON MARATHON The greatest marathoner of all time finished in 2:02:37. Kipchoge now owns the two fastest times ever. The secret to his success? KIPCHOGE Love the sport and train in a positive way. Kipchoge hopes to run the Olympic marathon in 2020. KIPCHOGE You’ll still see me around. Ethiopian Mosinet Geremew finished second in 2:02:38. He is now the second-fastest man in history. Hometown hero Mo Farah was fifth in 2:05:39. MO QUOTE I’m tired, I feel like I gave it all. It’s just one of those days where it’s what it is. Once the pacemaker dropped out, it was a little bit of a gap and somehow I just saw the gap getting bigger. I tried to close and I just didn’t have it. I tried my hardest but that’s what the result was. Can’t take anything from that. Kenyan Brigid Kosgei won the women’s race. Her 2:18:20 bested Vivian Cheriuyot by nearly 2 minutes. Kosgei also won Chicago last fall. Defending champion Vivian Cheruiyot finished second. Emily Sisson was sixth in 2:23:08. It is the second-fastest debut by an American woman. SISSON For my first one, I thought I did a pretty good job pacing it. Maybe it went a little too fast after halfway, a little too soon, but I mean, it’s my first one, so, I’m learning. Sisson is now the sixth-fastest American in history. SISSON It’s promising I think for my first one to go that well. It’s a good place to be and we have a lot to build off of, there are a lot of things we can improve on in the future. I’m pretty happy because I feel like for 2020 I can maybe look at the marathon and the 10K or either/or, so I feel like I’m in a pretty good place. Her training partner Molly Huddle finished 12th. Her 2:26:33 gives her the Olympic standard. HUDDLE I felt rough from like 10K on, like my legs were just really achy today. I thought about dropping out but I wasn’t sure how bad my time would be but then I realized, I’m well within the Trials time so I need to stay in and do my best. Daniel Romanchuk won the men’s wheelchair race in 1:33:38. It’s his fourth straight major marathon victory. Manuela Schär won the women’s race in 1:44:09.
