Here at HG, were all moved — and disturbed — by the riveting television series The Handmaid’s Tale. The dystopic show largely takes place in the Republic of Gilead, which is controlled by far-right extremists who want to purge Americans of their “sins.’ (Oh — and in this world, most women are barren save for a “lucky” few who are captured and turned into reproductive slaves, aka Handmaids, in case you haven’t watched yet.) That’s probably why a recent comment from a fan on Elisabeth’s Moss Instagram piqued the actress’ interest.

Moss, who plays the lead on the show — a Handmaid named Offred — posted a photo of herself at a pre-Emmys event on Instagram this week and, well, one commenter asked her a rather interesting question comparing Moss’ religion, Scientology, to that of the Christian extremist religion portrayed in the show.

In the comments section, user @moelbanks first praised the show, then wrote the following question:

“Question though, does it make you think twice about Scientology? Both Gilead and Scientology both believe that all outside sources (aka news) are wrong or evil…it’s just very interesting.”

Hmmm…interesting, indeed. The actress hasn’t been especially vocal about her faith recently, but she did have a strong response to @moelybanks. Moss replied with the following:

“That’s actually not true at all about Scientology…Religious freedom and tolerance and understanding the truth and equal rights for every race, religion and creed are extremely important to me. The most important things to me probably. And so Gilead and THT hit me on a very personal level. Thanks for the interesting question!”

According to The Telegraph, Moss’ family first introduced her to Scientology, and the actress has made the decision to embrace it. In her interview, she’s compared her faith to ways of life that have helped people feel centered, like veganism and yoga. It’s a simple as that.

We are counting down the days until Season 2 of The Handmaid’s Tale hits Hulu, and keeping our fingers crossed tight for Emmy magic!
