It’s the job of grownups to make magic for kids this time of year. And since 2020 circumstances will curtail some of the easy wins (like a visit to see Santa in person at the mall), we need to create even more delight at home. That’s where Elf on the Shelf comes in.
This little guy is the biggest holiday phenomenon since Santa himself. He’s a very modern multitasker, in that he both spreads joy and inspires good behavior. In case you’re new to the character, here’s the backstory: Elf on the Shelf is a little helper sent by Santa to keep an eye on kids by day and report back to the North Pole at night. He perches at different spots in the house (with an assist from parents), and part of the fun is spotting him in new locations.
Kids go absolutely batty for this guy. “Bought for my nephew who is six, and he LOVES HIM,” writes one reviewer. “He totally believes that Santa sent him.”
Trouble is, this time of year, it’s tough to purchase an Elf on the Shelf—kind of like buying roses on Valentine’s Day. So we combed the Internet in search of this guy—and some of his companions.
