  • An elderly woman was hospitalized after being hit by a motorbike from Prince William and Kate Middleton's police convoy on Monday afternoon.

  • The royal couple was en route to the Order of the Garter service in Windsor at the time.

  • William and Kate have been in touch with the woman and are "deeply concerned and saddened" about the accident.

An 83-year-old woman has been hospitalized and is in serious condition after being struck by a vehicle from Prince William and Kate Middleton's police convoy on Monday in West London, British outlet ITV reports.

The woman, identified as Irene Mayor, was believed to be crossing the street when she was hit by a police motorbike at the front of the convoy. William and Kate were on their way to St. George's Chapel in Windsor for the Order of the Garter service when the collision happened, according to ITV.

"The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were deeply concerned and saddened to hear about the accident on Monday afternoon," a statement issued by Kensington Palace reads.

"Their Royal Highnesses have sent their very best wishes to Irene and her family and will stay in touch throughout every stage of her recovery," the statement continued. BBC reports that the duke and duchess have been in contact with Mayor and have sent her flowers.

The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment and her next of kin were informed, according to a statement from London's Metropolitan Police, per CNN.

An investigation into the collision has also been launched by The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), after it was referred to them by the police "in line with procedure," BBC reports.

This isn't the only road traffic incident involving the royals this year. In January, the queen's husband Prince Philip was involved in an accident in Norfolk, England. His car flipped after hitting another vehicle carrying two women and a baby. The women were injured but the baby was unharmed. The New York Times reported in February that the prince would face no charges for the collision.
