This Elaborate "Starry Night" Liner Is Instagram's Latest Makeup Obsession

Makeup is a true art form and this popular Instagram is proof. Makeup artist Kayleigh Golding posted an intricate eye look called "Starry Night" to her feed on Friday, April 24, in honor of renowned artist Vincent Van Gogh and one of his most famous paintings. The detailed look mimics brushstrokes Van Gogh used in the painting and Golding credits follower @jazmaube for the suggestion. "Such a good idea," she writes in her caption. "Thank you."

"I asked for ideas on what to create and [@jazmube] suggested a look based upon art pieces," she tells Allure. "My grandma loves Van Gogh, so I naturally gravitated to 'Starry Night.'"

The photo has gotten over 29,000 likes in just three days and nearly every comment praises Golding for her talent. To create the look, she writes in the caption that she used Makeup Revolution's Conceal & Define Concealer in shade C2 and Huda Beauty's Easy Bake Loose Baking & Setting Powder in Sugar Cookie as the base. She then placed Rituel de Fille's The Siren Metamorphic Highlighter in the corner of the eyes to brighten up the eye area.

She lists products like Glisten Cosmetics' Vanilla and Blueberry Wet Liners and Suva Beauty's Space Panda, Grease, Taffy, and Tracksuit Hydra Liners as some of the tools she used to create this masterpiece, which she says took her about two hours to do one lid.

"I didn't actually do this look on both of my eyes," she tells Allure. "One eye took two hours to do, so I called it a day once I finished it. I guess in total this would probably take three to four hours overall."

As for getting the oil paint-like strokes, she says she used the Real Techniques Fine Liner Brush to create feather-light dashes on the lid. The water-activated eyeliner she uses, she explains, acts similarly to paint. She recommends first mapping out the shape of the background in blue and then letting it dry before working with one color at a time slowly so that colors don't accidentally mix together. Any mistakes, she says, can be fixed by painting it over with the same blue you use for the background, so don't get too frustrated.

Golding is known for her detailed, artistic eye looks. It seems more and more makeup artists are using quarantine to really experiment with their technique. Makeup artist Grace Ahn, for example, has been hosting weekly Zoom makeup parties with other makeup artist friends to stay creative and bring some joy into their — and our — lives during this time.
