El Paso Municipal Rose Garden is in full bloom in Central El Paso

The El Paso Municipal Rose Garden is in full bloom and a great place to visit this spring.

The rose garden, at 3418 Aurora Ave., features more than 1,000 rose bushes throughout four acres. There are approximately 300 different rose varieties.

The first roses were planted in 1958 by the city of El Paso and the El Paso Rose Society. It opened to the public in May of 1959.

The garden features different roses, such as miniature, climbing, Grandiflora, and shrub roses. Be sure to check out the roses' names when you take a stroll. Some are named after presidents, such as the beautiful red Mr. Lincoln rose or after celebrities like Marilyn Monroe.

There are special sections for Earth-Kind roses, known for being more resistant to insects and disease. People can get ideas on what types of roses to look for in home improvement stores to plant in their yards.

Roses can be quite hardy in El Paso's desert landscape. Many bloom from spring until June and then again in early winter. Most of the garden’s bushes are repeat bloomers.

The garden is open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. There are pathways and a water feature and several places to sit and take in the view.
