El Chapo Is a Very Unlikely Style Icon
Sean Penn is an internationally renowned movie star, so of Joaquín Guzmán — a criminal wanted in multiple countries — and the former, you’d expect the actor to be the style icon. But, as it turns out, following Penn’s interview with El Chapo, which appears in this month’s issue of Rolling Stone, the latter has emerged as an unlikely trendsetter.
According to TMZ, Barabas, a men’s retailer in Los Angeles that sells male blouses for Hollywood’s club crowd, has seen sales skyrocket because it carries the shirts Chapo has. In one image, an unnamed person captured the historical moment when the Mystic River star and “Shorty” shook hands in an undisclosed location. While Penn sports an unkempt head of graying hair and a classic black T-shirt, Chapo opted for something a bit flashier with a blue and gray striped paisley button-down. Sales of basic black tees have remained stagnant, while fans of the drug dealer are crashing Barabas’s website for the “Fantasy” shirt that is “filled with an abstract design that makes it stand out.”
Additionally, Joaquín Archivaldo Guzmán Loera was also taped for a 17-minute sit-down in a dusty yard against a desert landscape and a chainlink fence backdrop with a pickup truck obscuring any identifiers. On camera, he opted for an electric blue shirt, which is called the “Crazy Paisley” by Barabas and described as “definitely one to wear on a night on the town” (or, in El Chapo’s case, for a secret meet-up with a Hollywood star for a magazine feature — or for a crawl through secret drug tunnels).
But while men may aspire to dress just like one of the richest men in the world (according to Forbes … seriously), there are definitely some ladies who would love to replicate the “fugitive who’s looking to party” look. Unfortunately, Kate del Castillo’s outfit has been kept under wraps.
