Eastern Iowa Community Colleges offer free classes all April

Ever wonder what it is like to deliver a baby? Or how to make scones? Ways to fix your home HVAC system or to maintain your car? How to uncover family secrets? If you could be a welder or work a manual mill?

You can explore and experience all of that and more, during National Community College Month. Eastern Iowa Community Colleges are offering free classes the entire month of April, representing a range of topics taught by expert EICC instructors, according to a Wednesday release.

Registration is required and spots are limited, so act fast. All classes are offered in-person or online via Zoom. Here’s a sampling:

  • Dice-Making

  • Severe Weather Awareness

  • Getting Your Garden Started

  • Scones for the Perfect English Tea

  • Introduction to Delivering a Baby

  • AARP Smart Driver Workshop

  • Beer 101: From Grain to Glass

  • DIY Home HVAC

  • Crochet for the Beginner

  • Automotive Maintenance on Today’s Vehicles

  • The Plot Thickens – Family History Stories Revealed

  • Come Try Welding!

  • Walk Away Ingredients for Administrative Office Professionals

  • Electrical Basics

  • Homemade Pies

  • Diesel Engines of Today

  • Tame Your Tech

  • What’s Your Cybersecurity IQ?

In addition to the free classes, EICC is holding a Gaming Convention on Saturday, April 6 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Scott Community College Urban Campus, 101 W. 3rd St., Davenport. Enjoy board games, Dungeons and Dragons, and Smash Bros. Tournaments.

The board game library includes Catan, King of Tokyo, Descent, Munchkin, 7 Wonders, Exploding Kittens, Dominion, Ticket to Ride, and many more. Learn more and register on the EICC website.

The college is also inviting the public to view its half-hour episode of “The College Tour” TV series. The show delves into the heart of colleges and universities worldwide, offering an authentic portrayal of campus life, academics, housing, sports, and activities.

EICC, along with 18 other U.S. colleges, takes center stage in the show’s 11th season which will start streaming on Amazon Prime in May. Each campus is hosting a Watch Party in April, complete with snacks, activities, and a Q & A with students featured in the show. The watch parties will take place during the following days/times:

  • April 5 at 11 a.m. — Scott Community College Urban Campus, Community Room, 101 W. 3rd St., Davenport

  • April 11 at 11 a.m. — Clinton Community College, 1000 Lincoln Blvd., Clinton

  • April 24 at 1 p.m. — Scott Community College, Student Center, 500 Belmont Rd., Bettendorf

Community College Month is coordinated by the Association of Community College Trustees to increase awareness of the economic, academic, and equity advantages of attending community college. EICC is proud to be among the 1,000+ institutions across the U.S. celebrating Community College Month.
