Edward Enninful's British Vogue has received much (well-deserved) acclaim since he took over the title in 2017 for its inclusive approach to storytelling, inspiring imagery and overall creativity. Condé Nast recognized the value he brought to the company (which he's worked with since the late '90s), and gave him another job in late 2020: European editorial director of Vogue, overseeing the France, Italy, Germany and Spain editions, in addition to the U.K's. Now, he seems to be readying for a greater shift, announcing he's moving into an "editorial advisor" role in 2024 — one that seemingly marks the end of his leadership at British Vogue.

Enninful sent a memo to the editorial heads at Vogue France, Vogue Italia, Vogue Spain and Vogue Germany on Friday, which was provided to Fashionista by a spokesperson for Condé Nast. It read:

"Anna [Wintour] Roger [Lynch], and I have been discussing how I can play a broader role in enhancing Vogue globally.

"I am excited to share that from next year I will be stepping into the newly appointed position of editorial advisor of British Vogue and global creative and cultural advisor of Vogue, where I will continue to contribute to the creative and cultural success of the Vogue brand globally while having the freedom to take on broader creative projects.

"To optimize my increased global responsibilities, and to give British Vogue the new focus it will deserve, we saw the opportunity to hire, in concert with our global editorial structure, a head of editorial content for British Vogue. The position will partner very closely with you all and Anna, and will initially report to me until we have onboarded them.

"For now everything remains the same, and I’m so excited about what the future holds for us. I would like to thank Roger and Anna for their continued support.

Edward"

As reported by Vogue Business (very meta), Enninful will start this new position in 2024, which will give him more freedom to work on projects outside of Condé Nast while still contributing to the company.

His internal memo suggests he's looking to hire a head of editorial content for the region, following the trend we've seen within Condé to shift the top editorial position at titles with international editions from "editor-in-chief" to "head of editorial content." So, it does appear that his era at British Vogue — one of the strongest in recent publishing history — is coming to an end.
