Educator of the Week: Ms. Lopez of Avenal High School

AVENAL, Calif. (KSEE) – A teacher in Avenal is educating students at the same school she used to walk in.

Mabel Lopez has been busy helping all grade levels at Avenal High School. After earning her teaching credentials, she decided to head back to the same school she once attended and give back to her local community.

“Building those relationships with students it just feels really nice when you get to go into classrooms and students want to work with you because you’re there for them,” Lopez said.

As an RSP teacher, she takes the time to know every student’s needs.

“That has taught me how to be flexible how to be patient and I just really look up to her for that,” said Alexis Zuniga, an English teacher at Avenal High School.

Patience comes from making sure all her students are able to think independently and giving them the tools to learn on their own.

“So I have to have that courage I have to have the strength and advocacy to speak out for them and with them,” Lopez said.

After being a shy person herself when she was in school, she understands her students’ needs when a problem arises in the classroom

“She helps me with my homework assignments and she’s always there helping us out,” said Ramon Acosta, a student of Lopez’s.
