Education Matters: Students come together for Kids Day
FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE) – Students came together for Kids Day, a day of fun at the Fresno County Fairgrounds.
The fairgrounds became kids’ playground for Kids Day, a fun-filled place for young people with special needs.
“Our students who come to these events often times they don’t go out into the community, so this is an opportunity for the community to come to them, so they bring their activities, so hopefully, that forms a relationship of trust and security,” said Joy Bratton the Director of Special Education.
The office of the Fresno County Superintendent of Schools has hosted this event for 17 years.
The special education department provides medical and educational services to over 1,500 young people, but no matter their age, Kids Day can be a fun experience for all.
“Parents are coming here and watching their children interact with their peer group, with their teachers, with their para’s all in the context of fun which we know children learn by play,” said Michelle Copher, Fresno County Superintendent of Schools.
Vanessa Marroquinn brought her 7-year-old son to Kids Day and said she appreciates the opportunity to have her child interact with others in a safe environment.
“I love that I can come out here and be around other children that are autistic and he can be around other children who are autistic as well, and he can see, like, oh, it’s normal, don’t count me as different, because I’m normal, and I love that they have these events for these children,” Marroquinn said.
As the parent of a special needs child, it allows Marroquinn to share some special time with her son.
