The first step we took in searching for the best bamboo sheets to buy was crowd source favorites from our own editors. What to Look for in Bamboo Sheets

Before you make a purchase, know that there are several different types of bamboo fabrics: there's bamboo viscose, bamboo linen, bamboo lyocell, and bamboo cotton blends. The material you choose will affect how they feel to you, and how well you can sleep on them. When we're talking about sheets, Chris Sun, the founder and CEO of bamboo bedding brand My Sheets Rock, says: "Bamboo sheets are typically made with bamboo rayon fibers, which come from a bamboo plant and are milled to create an ultra-soft thread. Viscose, a subtype of rayon, is another common categorization of bamboo fibers, made from the pulp of bamboo plants." Meanwhile, lyocell is also made of pulp, with the manufacturing processes considered the least wasteful of the three.

Bamboo sheets are either sold with only bamboo material, or blended with another fiber for a hybrid fabric, resulting in different textures. The main difference between blends and 100 percent bamboo sheets is softness of the "hand," or the feel of the fabric against your skin. So, if you're wondering why one sheet set feels like a second skin while the other feels slightly scratchy, the blend can be the culprit.

"The feel of bamboo sheets will be driven by two things: material composition and construction," Hannah Samlin, the senior buyer of home textiles at Quince, adds. "If the bamboo has been blended with another fiber, you will notice the hand either more closely mimics one of the two fabrics or picks up on the characteristics of both. Quince's Linen Bamboo set, for instance, has more of the natural hand of linen, with the softness of bamboo."

What Are the Benefits of Bamboo Sheets?

First and foremost, bamboo sheets are silky smooth. High-quality bamboo feels incredibly soft to the touch and it's great for the skin. The breathable fabric is also often categorized as an eco-friendly material. "Bamboo grows quickly and uses far less water than cotton, making it one of the planet’s more resource-efficient materials," Samlin says. "They are temperature-regulating, moisture-wicking, naturally hypoallergenic, and inhospitable to dust mites and bacteria," Sun adds. The lightweight texture of bamboo sheets makes it a great alternative to other materials like linen or flannel for super hot sleepers.

"Linen sheets are another breathable and lightweight option, but the material is noticeably rougher than bamboo and can take time to soften," Sun says. "Sateen sheets are made with cotton and have a silkier feel, but this weave has a heavier weight optimal for cold sleepers or cooler months. Similarly, flannel is made from cotton but has a fluffy, thicker feel that provides nearly instant warmth. Lastly, cotton percale sheets are a little less soft with a crisp feel, but this is the most breathable type of cotton."

Are Bamboo Sheets Good for Hot Sleepers?

Yes! Sheets made from bamboo are great for hot sleepers or for those who in warmer climates due to their breathability. This makes it a smart pick for summer sheets, too, as it'll help eliminate any sweating at night. "Bamboo is known for its moisture-wicking properties, which means it naturally pulls moisture away from the skin," Samlin adds. Sun further says that the fabric has "superior thermal transfer," which means it lets you regulate your temperature throughout the night. "Sheets made with 100 percent natural bamboo fibers reduce humidity by 50 percent and keep you three to four degrees cooler compared to other materials," Sun says. How to Care for Bamboo Sheets

As always, check the care tag on your specific sheets before cleaning them for the best cleaning instructions, especially since bamboo is a more delicate material. However, Sun and Samlin both agree that a good rule of thumb is machine washing in cold water on a gentle cycle, followed by a low tumble dry. You'll also want to use gentle cleaning supplies. Samlin recommends a gentle detergent and Sun says to steer clear of chlorine bleach or products with ingredients like benzoyl peroxide and alpha hydroxyl acid.

A word to the wise for those purchasing bamboo sheets: there will be wrinkles. They're inevitable with this material, and unless you steam or iron your sheets every day, they're not completely avoidable. To reduce the amount of wrinkles, you can remove them from the dryer as soon as possible, plus skip dryer balls and fabric softeners to avoid pilling.
