Did Melania Trump Inspire Edie Falco?
Edie Falco took a fashion cue from the future first lady on Sunday night. At the CNN Heroes All-Star Tribute gala at the American Museum of Natural History, in New York City, the Horace and Pete actress wore a black version of the puffy sleeve dress that Melania Trump donned for the Republican National Convention in July.
The future first lady took the stage in Cleveland this summer wearing a white version of the dress, made by U.K.-based designer (and fellow Serbian native) Roksanda Ilinčić, that she purchased herself on Net-a-Porter because she “liked it,” according to a spokeswoman, and she was not alone in the sentiment. Shortly after Melania made her appearance in the white Margot, which Net-a Porter describes as “a beautiful option for the modern bride,” the garment sold out across the Internet. Last month, however, the piece was restocked exclusively for net-a-porter.com in three colors: ivory, pink, and black. (It was initially sold across a bevy of competitor sites including Matches, mytheresa.com, and Saks Fifth Avenue.)
Falco opted for the “sophisticated and playful” black crepe version, paired with classic black shoes and swept-back short hair. But while Trump’s choice of dress had plenty of hidden meaning, you’ll have to decide for yourself whether or not Falco’s dress is meant to be a contrasting political statement — she did donate to the Clinton campaign — or just a sophisticated red carpet turn.
