Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim director Edgar Wright gave an update on his upcoming adaptation of Stephen King's The Running Man.

Wright told the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he plans to honor the book more closely than the 1987 adaptation and shared that his reboot is "in active development".

The '87 version starred Arnold Schwarzenegger as Ben Richards in a dystopian America where a falsely convicted policeman gets his shot at freedom when he must forcibly participate in a TV game show where convicts and runners must battle killers for their freedom.

Wright said he felt the '87 film "didn't really adapt the book", and when he was asked by Simon Kinberg if he was interested in The Running Man, Wright said, "You know what? I've often thought that that book is something crying out to be adapted".

Acknowledging that it would be difficult to get right, Wright said, "it's something that we are working on, yes. I'll tell you that much".
