How Eddie Murphy's Trading Places Inspired This Wild New Watch Collab

We’re living in the Golden Age of Fun Watches, and there’s perhaps no brand having more fun with their watch collaborations than the irreverent preps at Rowing Blazers. Following hot on the heels of the brand’s limited-editionCarrera chronograph made in concert with TAG Heuer, vintage watch mega-dealer Eric Wind, and watch customizer George Bamford, the colorful New York-based label is once again at the helm of a compelling project—this time with Wind and Zodiac. If you’re unfamiliar with the latter’s Sea-Wolf, it was one of the very first dive watches on the market in 1953. Following that seminal release, the brand later developed a series of practical world timers for the jet-set, upon which the new Zodiac X Rowing Blazers Super Sea Wolf World Time GMT is based.

Housed in a 40mm stainless steel case, the watch’s design is inspired by Trading Places, the 1983 comedy starring Dan Aykroyd and Eddie Murphy. In one hilarious scene, Aykroyd’s down-on-his-luck commodities trader attempts to pawn off his expensive Swiss watch—“It tells the time simultaneously in Monte Carlo, Beverly Hills, London, Paris, Rome, and Gstaad!”—only to be offered a measly fifty bucks by none other than Bo Diddley.

Though the Super Sea Wolf World Time GMT is not, as Aykroyd claims of his ticker, “the thinnest water-resistant watch in the world,” it does, in fact, simultaneously tell the time in 27 different cities. Carlson, Wind, and Zodiac senior creative director Ryan White hilariously included Monte Carlo, Paris, Gstaad, and Rome on the watch’s rotating, blue city bezel—despite the fact that all are in the same time zone. (Look closely and you’ll notice that “Los Angeles” has also been replaced with “Beverly Hills.”) The Aykrodian bezel aside, the collab is otherwise subtle, with a black dial graced with the Rowing Blazers logo above 6 o’clock, plus an additional black stripe with a zigzagging white pattern made from recycled ocean plastic. The watch ships on a stainless steel Jubilee-style bracelet.

Limited to just 282 pieces, the Super Sea Wolf World Time GMT is a genuinely useful tool watch: With a simple adjustment of the STP 7-20 Swiss movement, one can use it to track the time in 24 time zones simultaneously. (Or 27, depending on how one counts.) And at $2,195, it’s a major savings over many other GMTs and world timers on the market—not to mention low-key hilarious. Even Bo Diddley would no doubt cough up more than $50 for one.
