Ed Begley Jr. and Daughter Took an Unlikely Method of Transportation to the Oscars

The father-daughter duo continues a long-held tradition.

Ed Begley Jr., a prolific actor who has been working since the late '60s, took his daughter, Hayden Carson Begley, to the Oscars for the third time in 2023. Also for the third time, the two took a unique mode of transportation to get there—public transportation.

Hayden documented the trip on TikTok, marking Sunday down as "day 7 of only taking public transportation in Los Angeles."

In the video, both Hayden and her father are all glammed up as they wait for a bus in the sun, before running to make a transfer on the subway line that Hayden notes, "only comes every 25 minutes on Sundays."

The two got off the subway at Hollywood and Vine and had to walk a bit to get to the venue, as Los Angeles closed off the closer station for the event.

Begley Jr. and Hayden had some other challenges as well, with Hayden realizing right before entering the theater that there was a hole in her dress, but thankfully, she encountered, "the sweetest woman ever who helped me patch the hole in my dress" in the bathroom, and the night went on.

The actor later lost his daughter's flats, so they bought flip-flops at a souvenir shop and took public transportation back home as well.

In official red carpet photos from the Oscars, the duo held up their TAP cards, which are Los Angeles' version of NY's MetroCard, and the official Los Angeles Metro Twitter account tweeted about their venture, writing, "And the award for Smartest Way to Get to the Oscars goes to..."

People on TikTok complimented Begley Jr. and Hayden for their commitment to environmentalism, for which Begley Jr. has been an intense public activist.

One person commented, "Your Dad has been a leader in environmental awareness for decades, literally walks the walk! 🌿👏."

In the past, Begley Jr. also attended events by bicycle, and this focus on environmentalism extends to all aspects of his life.

Begley Jr. described to Page Six how his commitment to the environment made him a Hollywood outcast in the 1990s, saying that his agents told him, "You’ve got to back off a little bit because, you know, it’s hard to get you a job."

But he stuck to his values and has continued acting ever since, most recently appearing in Better Call Saul and Young Sheldon.
